Delta Flight 977 bound from Philadelphia to Houston diverted to Havana after Oran Daniel Richards and Elaine Hawes were held at gunpoint by a cancer-stricken hijacker. UPI reports the FCC may not grant equal radio and TV time to the Democratic National Convention due to a prolonged Chicago telephone strike. A telegram to DNC Chairman John Bailey Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and DNC executive director John Crisswell outlined the issue. Heroes drive back hill 689 defenders in six day battle
UPI reports Lt. Col. Archie Van Winkle led about 1,000 Marines to stop a six day assault on Hill 689 two miles west of Khe Sanh. Casualties reached 40 killed and 150 wounded among Marines with 140 enemy dead. Medal of Honor winner Van Winkle praised Huey Roark who fought in hand to hand and grenade thrower defense. Cook Gunnery Sgt. Ken David then led cooks and clerks to shore up the defense and repulse the final assault.

Post Office to Close 347 Small Town Offices This Summer
The Post Office Department will cut weekend service and end Saturday city home deliveries this summer if Congress does not intervene. A manpower ceiling forces the closure of 347 small town fourth class post offices. 250 close on Aug 2 and 97 on Aug 30. Rural delivery will serve customers from other offices.
