In Newport News Virginia an angry crowd of about 3000 rioters attacked the Newport News and Drydock Co injuring at least 15. Rocks were thrown, cars burned and gunfire rang out as a policeman fired in the air to escape. Floodwaters threaten Oliver Springs as rescue boats capsize

Rain swollen Indian and Cow Creeks flood Oliver Springs Tennessee sending residents into trees and onto poles awaiting help. An early report feared two or three men drowned after a rescue boat capsized but later word said the men were saved.

Ohio Crops Forecast Rise For Wheat And Corn

The Agriculture Department projects higher Ohio wheat and corn yields this year. July estimates put corn at 269,973,000 bushels, 81 bushels per acre, up from 261,660,000 last year, while winter wheat is forecast at 56,658,000 bushels versus 46,137,000 last year.

Norwalk Names Albion Gotaas New School Superintendent

Norwalk selects Dr Albion V Gotaas as superintendent with a three year contract. He brings a PhD from Ohio State earned 1955 and has leadership roles in Medina and Princeton City Schools. Gotaas has taught at multiple levels and worked as a research assistant and principal. He begins in Norwalk on August 1 after completing Medina duties July 31.

Humidity Blamed In Outages In Norwich

High humidity blamed for three scattered power outages in Norwich this week. Outages lasting five to 25 minutes hit the business district on West Main Street and another circuit, with a wet tree branch causing a line to trip. Fuses blew at the plant during the Tuesday afternoon outage. air conditioners were not blamed.

Monroeville car dispute over unlicensed vehicle in Vietnam family

A Wakeman woman offered to house the unlicensed 1961 Ford convertible of Lester Hopkins, serving in Vietnam, whose father says a Monroeville mayor warned it must be moved. Mayor Clayton Lord denied involvement but police enforcement and 15 day notices were cited. Hopkins and father dispute who set policy and the car’s fate.

Salisbury Files For Mayor In Monroeville Race

Kenneth G. Salisbury, president of the Salisbury Board of Public Affairs, formally challenges Mayor Clayton Lord for the November mayoral race. Salisbury filed Tuesday to run, while Lord has picked up a petition and is expected to file soon. This marks Salisbury first bid for the office.

Board Reacts to Repeated Teacher Resignations

Nor walk Board of Education members pressed on resignations during Tuesday night session. Paul Miller studied state rules while debating whether to reject or report resignations. The cases include Paul Shuey who quit May then June and again this month, and Joseph and Judy Clifton hired last month. Shuey returns to Pennsylvania to teach. Clifton duo were slated for high school guidance and elementary classroom work.
