Car Of GI In Viet May Be Impounded

MONROEVILLE The unlicensed car on Walter Hopkins’s property at 26 Fulton St may be impounded. Mayor Clayton Lord says the vehicle belongs to a Vietnam service member and violates village rules. The mayor plans written notices to about 60 owners to enforce the ordinance. Police Chief Jerrold Henery says no immediate impoundment without orders.

McNamara leaves Vietnam with hints on troop needs

Defense Secretary McNamara ends a five day Vietnam visit signaling scrutiny of requests for more than the 470000 U S troops. He affirmed policy to provide troops commanders deem necessary and left for Washington. Israel and Egypt accept UN observers for Suez cease fire line amid post war tensions. Port Fuad and Port Said clashes prompted UN calls, while Egypt’s acceptance follows Soviet naval moves. Six Cuban pirates seized a Panamanian freighter then fled to Miami Beach, abandoning ship after mutiny failed. they returned ashore by rowboat and disabled radio.

London Bridge to be sold for replacement in 1970

London Bridge is reportedly in poor service and slated for sale by the Corporation of the City of London. A new bridge will replace the 136 year old span across the Thames in 1970. The current bridge is not the nursery rhyme version and the older houses bridge was dismantled in 1832.

Alabama Governor Wal lace Shows Excellent Recovery After Tumor Surgery

Alabama Governor Lurleen Wallace underwent more than four hours of surgery at M D Anderson Hospital in Houston to remove a malignant tumor. Dr. R Lee Clark announced no adverse reaction and that she is in excellent condition after the lemon sized tumor was removed from a sigmoid coil.

Norwalk Names Medina Leader Gotaas New School Chief

Albion V. Gotaas, current Medina superintendent for six years, will become Norwalk schools superintendent starting August 1. His contract, for $16,500, was verbally agreed, with a formal contract to follow. Gotaas previously worked in Mt. Vernon and was born in the Belgian Congo.

Burglars Steal $12,500 In Clothes From Monroeville Store

Monroeville police say a professional burglary at Leo Heitz’s clothing shop Monday night netted over $12,000 in apparel and $500 cash. Chief Jerrold Henery called the break in a professional job as intruders pried the front door open.

EN3 Robert C. Barman Jr. of Norwalk was aboard the L.5 U S S Coconino County when it struck a mine off Cua Viet Nam on June 28 and sank. He was uninjured and later listed at 914 8148 in Norwalk.

Vain Black Bird Haunts WLKR Radio Station

A narcissistic red winged black bird harasses staff at WLKR, per station manager James Westerhold. The bird perches on car doors and mirrors, intrudes indoors, and disrupts work as police refuse to shoot it. Staff fear its return in rain.

Wakeman Plans Sesquicentennial Queen Contest

Wakeman will kick off its Sesquicentennial with a queen contest and foot-stomping square dance at 7 p.m. Friday July 21 in the Wakeman Grange Hall. The Sesqui Queen will be chosen from 7 to 9 pm and crowned at the dance by the Camden Fiddlers in an old fashioned hoedown. Residents are urged to wear old shoes to join the foot stomping and a prize will go to the most authentic pioneer costumes.

Norwalk Boy Dies at 9 in Cleveland Hospital

Mitchell Edward Stanford, nine, son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Stanford of Norwalk, died at Cleveland Children's Hospital after being admitted Sunday. Cause of death not listed. The father is known as the clown Fritz in area parades. Funeral arrangements by Kubach Smith Funeral Home to be announced.
