Verde Valley Desert Oasis Oasis in the desert and irrigation lifeline

Virginia Patton recounts a Verde Valley trip to the 65 acre Merritt Ranch near Oak Creek. The piece notes the valley’s 12 000 acres of irrigated hay grain and fruit, a 1200 square mile area between Flagstaff and Prescott with 10 000 residents, and water systems dating back to ancient India farmers. It highlights drought pressures and rising hay costs while praising irrigation cooperation and regional modern development.
