Terri Marie Wade, who had open heart surgery in Cleveland last Wednesday, returned home Monday night. Hospital nurses say recovery typically runs ten days to two weeks before discharge. Terri is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Wade of North Fairfield.
Kathleen Murry a 21 year old from Chicago gave birth to a 7 lb 13 oz girl in a car on the turnpike near the Elmore Maintenance Building at 4 55 p m while awaiting an ambulance. Dr Edward Kieffer of Elmore assisted delivery. Mother and infant were reported doing well at Fremont Memorial Hospital.
In Cape Town Dr Philip Blaiberg and his medical team clashed over treatment for his lung and liver complications after his world record heart transplant. Sources say officials debated another transplant versus anti rejection therapy as the 53 year old improved and requested steak and eggs. Doctors credited an imported anti lymphocyte serum for his recovery.
Defense reports say missiles bases in Outer Mongolia threaten China and U S bases in Korea Japan and Okinawa. Some sites are mobilized on wheels with Outer Mongolia agreeing to a 20 year defense pact with the Soviets aimed at deterring China.
Mostly sunny and warm with humidity today. Showers and scattered storms possible late afternoon into tonight then clearing and cooler. Fair and cooler Wednesday with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and lows around 50s. Births list several local families. marriage license applications filed for Pontius and Dawson and Hovatter and Green. Two deaths reported Edward J. Schneider and Lawrence P. Reidy.
Norwalk public schools may adopt a new K through eighth grade mathematics program at tonight's board meeting. Six resignations are under consideration including elementary principal Gale Leimbach. Dr. Albion V. Gotaas will present teacher candidates and discusses budget planning with the finance committee for a late month vote. The meeting begins at 8 in the administration building at West Monroe and North Hester Streets.
In New South Wales a 23 year old gunman Mellish surrendered after eight days holed up with his teen bride Beryl and 12 week old child. Police chief Norman Allen led the trio from the siege house as Mellish requested a medical exam at the army recruiting office. He had threatened mass murder and had kept 70 officers at bay during the standoff.
The Grain Merchants plant in Monroeville failed to sell at a sheriff sale on the Huron County Courthouse steps. Three parcels were sold to the Union Bank and Savings Co. for minimum bids while the plant property drew no bids. The Ridgefield Township parcel sold for the minimum bid and the Oxford Township parcel also sold.
Wakeman faces a police leadership gap after acting chief Al Van Fossen quit following a 4-3 defeat of a motion to suspend him. Former chief David Ortner, who resigned amid controversy, is to work until July 15. The village will rely on the Huron County sheriff’s department until a full time officer is hired.
Look magazine reports that hours before announcing retirement President Johnson told Hubert Humphrey he might not survive another term. The clincher was a morning talk with daughter Lynda Bird Robb who spoke of Chuck Robb overseas and questioned fighting abroad. Johnson said he was tired and might not live through another term. White House gave no comment.
A 19 year old Norwalk resident, Nick Takacs of 38 Reed Street, suffered injuries when his motorbike collided with a car near the municipal swimming pool on St Marys Street. He was taken to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital by Kubach Smith Ambulance. Police were investigating the incident. the car driver was Mrs Charles Rion of 190 Scottwood.
Two people were injured when a car pulled in front of a semi at the Routes 18 and 20 junction today. Marshall Rucker of Akron and Billy Tester of Rittman were involved. both were treated at Fisher-Titus Hospital. Rucker was cited for failure to yield right of way.
