Ohio Penitentiary Guards Resign After Fire Riot

Warden Ernie Maxwell in Columbus says seven guards quit recently after the prison fire and riot a week ago to take higher paying private industry jobs. He notes 150 workers left last year and cites low pay as the main cause, saying guards can earn more sweeping floors elsewhere.

Vice President H Humphrey escapes scare from stadium scoreboards

In Cleveland security around Vice President Hubert H Humphrey was startled by explosions at City Hall during his visit. The noise proved to be the Municipal Stadium scoreboard exploding after a first inning home run by Louis B Johnson known as LBJ. In Philadelphia Frances Cardinal Brennan died at 74 after illness. He had returned to the United States for treatment.

Woman killed as trailer jackknifes into car on I 90

Maybell Conner was killed when a Fulton New York family trailer jackknifed and struck their car on Interstate 90 near Cleveland. Her husband Matthew and grandchildren Lynne Parrish and Rene Parish sustained minor injuries. The family had been visiting Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton.

Plane Is Returned-Minus Passengers

A Northwest Orient Boeing 727 hijacked to Havana was returned to the United States with 87 passengers removed. Cuban officials cited safety concerns for a fully loaded takeoff from Havana. the flight originated in Minneapolis and Chicago and landed in Miami.

Unidentified plane bombs U S forces camp near Saigon

Reliable U S military sources report an unmanned or unidentified aircraft possibly a MIG flying from Cambodia and dropping three high explosive bombs near the Thanh Tri Special Forces camp 30 miles west of Saigon. Meeting Set July 18 On Parking Plan

Downtown businessmen and property owners are called to a July 18 meeting to discuss creating a special assessment district to fund free off street parking. Harvey Moskowitz of a New York firm will assist in explaining the proposal. Downtown Steering Committee members will meet tonight to finalize details. An owner of a proposed parking site has been invited. James W. Hogan chairs the committee and notes prior informal talks with several property owners.

Fourth of July Parade in Norwalk Packs 120 Units

About 120 parade units will march in Norwalk's Fourth of July event starting at 10 a.m. from the post office to the fairgrounds. Trophy awards cover bands, units, floats, and more with drills at 1 p.m. and an antique car rally at 3:30 p.m. The day’s program lists concessions, lunch, fireworks, and speeches.
