Gov. James A. Rhodes announces he will seek another term in 1966. He informs 14 year old Michael Steinberg of Maumee Country Valley Day School before filing petitions for the Republican primary.
A New York Central freight train struck a derailed baggage car of a passenger train near De Graff Ohio on Friday night. The collision derailed three freight engines and 42 cars, blocking Ohio 508 as a chemical leak from a tank car prompted area closures.
In Honolulu Prince Charles age 17 watched two Hawaiian girls perform impromptu hula dances during a layover on his Australia trip. The future king beamed as dancers swayed to Hawaiian tunes played by two hastily assembled orchestras.
Marriage license applications listed for Robert Burdue and Gertrude Reider man plus others including Ronald Worcester and Juanita Ferrell. One license granted for Ofe Clark and Perlie Phillips. Birth announced for Donald Field's daughter. Deaths noted for Elmer Kienzle, Victor Hildebrandt, and James Harrison Garrett. Washington UPI Lt Gen Lewis B Hershey said local draft boards will use Korean War style deferment guidelines for college men and high school students. Students scoring 70 percent or better as undergraduates and 80 percent as graduates would be deferred with class rank criteria applying at each course level.
Two cars collided on Route 163 about three miles east of Genoa at 6:30 a.m. Five people were killed and a sixth injured. Victims include Leslie Benefield and spouse of Genoa, Jose Yarrita 29 of Williston, Ramia Sanchez of Fremont, Gorge Arellanda 33 of Fremont, and Andrew Zuniga 25 of Fremont. Police are investigating cause.
A sequence of gas explosions ripped through the Paramount and Plymouth hotels in Boston's red light district killing nine people and injuring 58. Firefighters cleared rubble and searched ice crusted debris as the state fire marshal opened an inquiry.
John F. Ernsthausen of Norwalk was elected chair of a special Founders Committee for Major Gifts to support the Tri-County College Campus appeal. The campaign aims to raise $600,000 by March 1 to secure $1.8 million in state aid and complete a $2.4 million project, with funds contingent on local underwriting and Regents approval.
Earl Jackson Puckett, 18, of New London Route 2, was sentenced in Common Pleas Court to one to 20 years in the Ohio State Reformatory after pleading guilty to auto theft. He had been held on a $5,000 bond in the Huron County jail since January 14 on a now misdemeanor statutory rape charge, which was reduced after waiving the grand jury. The six month county jail term for that charge was suspended.
A 13 year old Norwalk girl confessed to taking six to ten of about 100 silver dollars missing from Mr and Mrs Thomas E Fox of Maple Street. Police say the girl had claimed her father gave the coins but later admitted taking some. The case was referred to Juvenile Court for further action.
New London Village filed a $150000 bond issue with the Huron County Board of Elections on Friday for improving and extending the municipal waterworks system. The plan calls for a 1.53 mill tax to run 25 years with 55 percent needed for passage, including potential acquisition of required real estate.
A Norwalk man, DeWitt Wadsworth, 28, reported being assaulted early this morning while helping a woman with a stalled dark Pontiac near the railroad underpass north of New Haven. He was treated for facial injuries and denture damage and suspects a robbery motive by two men, described as about six feet and five-foot-seven, approaching from the scene. The woman was a white female, 20 to 25, with dark brown hair. Local deputies noted the incident as a possible professional robbery attempt.
