Vietnam War Toll Rises With 218 U S Killed Last Week

Military officials reported 218 U S soldiers killed in the Vietnam war in the past week, bringing total U S battle deaths to 16 667. Injuries climbed to 2 216 from 1 796 the previous week with 949 hospitalized.

North Korean claims on PUEBLO commander fraud exposed

North Korea broadcast a confessional message alleging Cmdr Lloyd Bucher on a spy mission when his ship Pueblo was seized. UPI notes Pyongyang radio aired the same text as the agency and the Pentagon calls the statement a travesty and not written by an American.

Johnson orders large reserve call up to back Pueblo recovery

The Pentagon released a list showing more than 14 600 Air Force and Navy air reservists called up by President Johnson to back U S demands for the return of the USS Pueblo and its 83 men. An Army and Marine Corps reserve mobilization was also under consideration. The action includes 372 fighters and personnel.

Greenwich farmer sues neighbors over hog damage to corn

Kenneth Putt of Greenwich files in Huron County Common Pleas Court claiming hogs owned by Leman A Hopkins and Frank Hopkins roamed onto his cornfields, causing $15,000 in damage after he asked them to keep the swine on their property. The suit names the Hopkinses as defendants.

Tradesmen Aim to Become School Teachers at EHOVE

Sixty one area trades and industry workers joined a workshop at EHOVE Vocational School to qualify as high school teachers. The program run with Toledo State University formed three classes with sessions nightly through May. Participants covered cosmetologists draftsmen auto mechanics printers welders and more.

Bank Names New Director at Farmers & Citizens Bank

Norwalk GI Wounded In Viet Nam To Return Home Soon

Sp4 William F. Laing 26, son of Mr and Mrs William S Laing of Norwalk, was wounded near Chu Lai on January 6. He suffers a head wound, ear drum, arm fractures, multiple mortar injuries and a shoulder gunshot. Survived by Viet Cong after being left for dead, he was rescued and is to be brought to a military hospital near Ravenna Ohio within 10 days. He was drafted in 1966 and previously stationed at Ft Benning and Okinawa.

Soldier recounts three days in Viet Cong siege and wounds

Sp4 William Laing describes being wounded in battle with Viet Cong after a lieutenant led a small group into a rice paddies fight. He was shot in the head and arm, ears and elbows injured, left in a paddy for three days before rescue, with both arms in traction and multiple injuries.
