Lorain School Board Ends Doctor Evans Superintendency

The Lorain School Board voted not to renew Dr. John W. Evans's contract as superintendent, expiring July 31. Evans said there was no major criticism and complained of no opportunity for evaluation discussion while a board spokesman called the vote the board’s expression of feeling. In France, Mont Blanc debris search continued after Air India Boeing 707 crash killed 117, including Dr. Homi J. Bhabha.

Judge opposes jail term change for drunken driving

Cleveland traffic court Judge Anthony Rutkowski rejected a proposed city law change requiring a three day jail term for drunken drivers. He said the statute would be ineffectual and noted the traffic committee lacks jurisdiction over the courts as it reviews the measure removing the physical control provision.

President Johnson funds New York office for Mrs Kennedy

President Johnson requests 50000 dollars in his budget to run the New York office of Mrs John F Kennedy for one more year. Congress does not have to fund the widow but is expected to continue as long as she and Johnson wish. She maintains the office with three secretaries to handle mail.

47 Yanks Die In Viet Crash

Forty seven American service men died when a USAF C123 transport crashed into a jungle hillside near An Khe in the Central Highlands. Witnesses reported a fireball after takeoff from Dee Mang Pass. The plane carried 43 soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Division and four crew. Investigators probed possible enemy fire as mortars, fuel, and ammunition contributed to the disaster.

North Fairfield youth placed on five year probation

Donald Beekman, 18, North Fairfield, was placed on five years probation and ordered to leave Huron County in a Common Pleas Court hearing. He previously pleaded guilty to probation violation on December 18 and faced one to seven years in the Ohio State Reformatory. He was arrested by Norwalk police on September 7 on two counts of petty larceny and one count of grand larceny.

Draftees Cannot Join Reserves In Huron County

The Huron County Selective Service Board announced that men with draft induction notices may not enlist in reserve units. The policy takes effect immediately, though previous enrollments into regular service before induction remain valid if entry is on active duty before the induction date. About four or five county men enlist monthly in reserves after mailing induction slips. Thirty five men are called for induction and forty three for physicals in February.

Johnson seeks stronger federal push to fight rural poverty

President Johnson asked Congress to create a federally aided program pairing rural governments and small cities to target poverty. He proposed community development districts, federal planning grants, pilot district selection by the agriculture secretary, and student loan programs with loan forgiveness for service in poor rural areas, noting nearly half of the poor live in rural areas.

Jury Finds Lewis Guilty of Daytime Burglary

Eric Lewis of Pittsburgh was found guilty of breaking and entering an inhabited dwelling during the day in Huron County Common Pleas Court. A six man six woman jury deliberated about an hour before returning the verdict. Lewis also used the name Eugene William Morgan and faces sentencing later.

Did American Take Own Life? Autopsy In Moscow

UPI reports the U S Embassy accepted a Soviet autopsy on Newcomb Mott but sought more evidence before accepting suicide as the cause. Soviet doctors found a deep throat incision about five inches long and multiple neck and other injuries. An embassy doctor noted bruises likely occurred after death during handling.
