Police report three car break-ins over the weekend at the high school lot. Missing items include a purse with $100, an attache case with school papers, a diaper bag worth about $15, and a $15 camera. Some items were found later at local locations.
Gabrielle Chanel known as Coco Chanel dies at 87 in the Ritz Paris suite. She remained active, preparing for a spring show. Chanel No 5, introduced in 1922, and Chanel No 19, launched in 1970, cemented her legendary status.
William A. Lavelle, 45, an Athens attorney, is set to chair the Ohio Democratic Party succeeding Eugene P. O Grady. Lavelle, previously vice chairman, was supported by Gov. John J. Gilligan after O Grady left to head the Highway Safety Department. Lavelle led Athens County from 1958 to 1966 and has been the 10th District state committeeman, a 1956 and 1960 national convention delegate, and Kennedy supporter who campaigned in West Virginia in 1960.
Senior Center events include a safety talk by Lt. Jack Walsh on highway dangers and an open vote Tuesday for the 1971 1973 Senior Center Advisory Board as the Advisory Board held a special session to report nominees.
Calvin Britton, mortician for 26 miners killed in the Hyden mine disaster, rejects Dr. Buff's charge that widows were overcharged. Britton says costs were modest with bills not yet presented and insurance unsettled. He notes funerals included steel vaults, embalming, full dress, and viewing for one family member.
