The U S Post Office Department ends this week after 182 years of service as Congress created The U S Postal Service to take over its functions. The mails will continue to move, possibly faster as the transition unfolds.
Newark, Ohio, with 42,500 residents, remains under a state of emergency as 57 of its 66 police officers continue a sick call strike for higher wages. The Ohio National Guard offers assistance if needed while only nine officers work, handling only emergency calls amid a peaceful but strained city mood.
