Newark Police Strike Grounds City Services

Newark, Ohio, with 42,500 residents, remains under a state of emergency as 57 of its 66 police officers continue a sick call strike for higher wages. The Ohio National Guard offers assistance if needed while only nine officers work, handling only emergency calls amid a peaceful but strained city mood.

Freighter Slices Panama Tanker In Half Off Dover

A Peruvian freighter cut the Panamanian tanker Texaco Caribbean in two in the English Channel early today causing an explosion and window damage nine miles away. Nine of the Texaco Caribbean crew are missing and feared dead. twenty were rescued. The Paracas limped to a buoy, a salvage ship nearby, as the wrecked bow sank and the stern was expected to follow.

New London Ends Longest Losing Streak in 1967–68

High Court to Hear Cassius Clay Draft Case

The Supreme Court agreed to hear Cassius Clay's conscientious objector appeal of his draft evasion conviction. Clay, now Muhammad Ali, faces Joe Frazier in a March boxing match as the case proceeds. The 5th Circuit upheld the conviction twice, most recently on July 6, 1970, with a five year sentence and a $10,000 fine.

County Planning Calls for Austerity in 1971 Budget

Huron County commissioners approve a 1 302 966 dollar general fund appropriation up from 1 227 809 last year and outline goals for 1971. They prioritize the Christie Lane School training center for the mentally retarded while pledging no deficit spending. Property tax income is expected to rise to 373 800, with other revenues forecast at 650 000. Some cuts include Child Welfare Service from 66 500 to 63 500 and Juvenile Court from 44 500 to 44 000.
