New London Marine Lance Cpl Walton Dies in Vietnam
New London mourns as Lance Cpl. Lawrence R Walton 21 dies of shell fragment wounds in Vietnam while defending a village. He was the town’s third service member killed, following Sgt Claude Howard and Cpl Thomas Gopp. Walton, an East Main Street native, was a 1964 New London High School graduate and served since 1966 after training at Camp Pendleton. He had been stationed at Hoi An and was transferring to a possibly safer area when killed. His body will be returned to Eastman Funeral Home within 10 days.

Norwalk schools faced questions over the racial makeup of slow learner classes after Emerson Cole claimed 60 percent of such students are Negroes. Dr. Albion V.
