A Navy SP2E Neptune crashed five minutes after takeoff from near Andrews Air Force Base during a five hour training flight. All nine crew members, most from the Washington Baltimore area, were killed in the explosion in a field. The tragedy underscored weekend naval reserve duty risks.
Atlanta reports the Georgia General Assembly plans a joint session to choose as governor the segregationist Democrat Lester Maddox, who trailed Republican Howard Callaway in last fall’s election. The move follows Maddox leading in party backing and amid high political tension.

Huron County commissioners approved increases to the general fund totaling 815,206 for 1967, up from 748,482. Major rises include 22,000 for unanticipated emergencies and 92,500 for Shady Lane Home due to more patients and added services. County highways budget remained 986,000. dog and kennel at 16,200.
Texas Governor John B. Connally told the Dallas Times Herald that he urged President Kennedy not to visit Texas in 1963 noting Kennedy had not appeared in Texas since 1960 and would face criticism if he attended multiple fund raising dinners. The Manchester account said the Texas trip was vexing and unappetizing to Kennedy.
Reports from Shanghai and Canton describe violent clashes between factions supporting and opposing Mao Tse-tung. Eyewitnesses note unrest across Nanking and Canton while Red Chinese forces reportedly move to quell street fighting. Diplomats are recalled and Hong Kong papers warn of potential civil war amid a shaken Beijing.
Twelve fire units and 51 firefighters from Margar etta Perkins and Bellevue fought a three hour blaze at the Ford Motor Co. in Sandusky. Officials said losses likely high but exact damage could not be determined. The fire began in a vent window of the storage area due to a faulty fluorescent light and mainly affected storage of finished products. Smoke and water caused most damage as about a dozen sprinklers operated.
Huron County Board of Education debated a proposed master plan to restructure Ohio schools. The plan would abolish the county district and create Administrative Educational Districts to run programs for 3,500 to 35,000 students, possibly effective July 1, 1970, with two more years of study possible.
Hearings for three Willard men charged with aiding an offender of the Ohio Wildlife law were held in Huron County Court. Bond was set at $250 cash or $500 property for each. Named defendants are Nelson C. Hendricks, Edgil Wright, and Earl Ray Hicks. Officials say they aided Glenn Hicks in shooting a deer on December 1. a warrant has been issued.
A 17-year-old New London boy testified in Huron County Juvenile Court that he bought and drank beer at Riverside Tavern in Clarksfield on October 7. He identified bartender Eugene Gordy as the seller, with the state pursuing a charge of acting to induce delinquency of a minor. The trial, unusual for juvenile court, began with a seven-women, five-men jury and was set to continue.
Mrs Julia Neuberger of 58 N Hester Street has won $1000 in a statewide promotion by a gasoline company. She was notified this morning that she had won the contest.
At Gov. James A. Rhodes inaugural in Columbus a Columbus radio blared rock and roll as Lt. Gov. Brown conferred with Rhodes staff. The moment of oath saw Missey Moore, the governor’s granddaughter, dash to Rhodes and leap into his arms as the crowd watched in surprise.
