Fed Cuts Discount Rate Again Amid Slow Economy

The Federal Reserve Board reduced the discount rate charged to commercial banks from 5% to 5 1/4%. New London Reservoir Wins State Grant Approval

Airliner crash in Leningrad kills ninety on New Year’s Eve

Ninety people die when an Aeroflot Ilyushin 18 crashes after takeoff from Smolny Airport on a New Year’s Eve flight to Yerevan. Engines failed and the craft disintegrated. Soviet officials had provided few details initially. The accident occurs as Neny reported, with confirmation from aviation sources.

Oil Spill Closes Motel Parking Lot in Lima Ohio

Nearly 5,000 gallons of crude spilled onto the Howard Johnson Motel parking lot near Interstate 75 after a Buckeye Pipeline line ruptured in Lima Ohio. Fire crews stood by as clean up began and some oil reached a nearby creek. Buckeye said cause under investigation.

UAW Rejects Chrysler's Latest Offer

The United Auto Workers vow to decide Monday whether to strike Chrysler after rejecting a three year contract offer. The union calls the deal deficient for lacking retroactive pay for about 120 000 UAW workers in the United States and Canada and for pressuring reduced representation and paid absences. Jail Monitors Studied for Huron County Security System

Ed Leveritt of the North Star Council of Governments asked county commissioners to survey the Huron County Jail for a closed circuit television security system and to study juvenile detention facility needs. A three camera system with three monitors may cost about 6000 dollars, with 60 percent covered by an Ohio Law Enforcement Planning Agency grant.
