A fierce Midwest blizzard snarled Iowa with heavy snow and high winds. Interstates were impassable and several deaths were reported as shoppers, travelers, and mail delivery halted. Snow warnings extended into Wisconsin Michigan and Minnesota with several airports and cities affected.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew told Buckley on Firing Line that liberal editorial bias fuels criticism of him as a divider in politics. Former House Speaker John W. McCormack praised Franklin D. Roosevelt as a humanitarian who gave the people hope and helped revive the nation. He also lauded Harry S Truman as possessing the strongest intuition he has seen, and recalled praying for President Johnson during his own bid to be next in line. He cited 11½ hour meetings with Roosevelt and a 30 minute session with Truman.
Maurice B. Smith was sworn in as Huron County's first Democratic commissioner in three decades. He joined two Republican colleagues at the organizational meeting and was part of the board that elected Donald Robertson as chairman for 1971. Robertson warned the first weeks would be the roughest as they handle appropriations. Evangeline Miller was reappointed clerk. The board approved rehiring dog warden Clarence Rounds and courthouse staff, plus Shady Lane Home administrators John and Mrs. Laible, and other county officers including a bee inspector Elmer Horning.
Norwalk will borrow 130000 to cover unpaid electric fund bills through November. City Auditor Charles Hipp said council will consider the authorization Tuesday night and noted December bills arrive in January. The loan aims to restore normal bill paying, following earlier projections of up to 220000. Hipp imposed new purchase order controls citywide to curb deficits.
About 2,000 Pittsburgh teachers from the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers walked out with 1,206 voting to reject the contract. Schools were to open later for 80,000 pupils while negotiations continued. The rival Pittsburgh Teachers Education Association planned alternative classes if needed.
An Elyria man Larry L. Harrington aged 40 pleaded innocent to attempting to pass counterfeit money at a Norwalk bar. He and Mervin R. Hinkle 33 were arrested after a speeding chase on U. S. 20. Bond set at 10 000 cash or 20 000 property. Hinkle faces possession charges and may be moved to Toledo. Counterfeit bills with identical serial numbers were found in the car. Maximum penalty up to 5000 fine and 1 to 15 years in jail.
