In Tokyo Emperor Hirohito appeared behind a bullet proof shield on the Imperial Palace balcony as crowds celebrated the New Year. A factory worker with a police record fired a steel ball at the emperor on Jan 2 1969, prompting the precaution.
A blaze at a seaside resort hotel in SHIN WAKANOURA Japan during New Year celebrations killed 15 and injured 11. Postmaster Naobumi Nishida, 50, died leaping from his room. Victims perished trapped in rooms and hallways as corridors filled with flames and smoke.
All 16 people aboard perished when a United Arab Airlines Comet jetliner disintegrated on approach to Tripoli Airport. The British-built four-jet plane crashed near the airport road about 12 miles from Tripoli center, according to airline officials.
UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL reports a surge in fatal traffic accidents over the 78 hour New Year weekend. Early estimates range from 400 to 500 dead and 19 000 to 23 000 injured with the toll ahead of NSC projections. UPI tallies 193 deaths by 3 a m EST since the holiday began.
Washington caps 91st Congress as SST stalemate nears its end. Senate leaders strike informal deal with Sen. Proxmire to end session today with a showdown vote on the supersonic transport in the next session.
About 250000 Hoffa supporters signed a petition urging President Nixon to grant parole. Senator Norris Cotton said he would deliver it to Nixon soon. The petition, backed by the MSBTC, claims Hoffa faces cruel and inhuman punishment in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Early Friday a drag car lost control, striking spectators including three children. 19-year-old Joseph Michael Soliz of Pasadena was jailed on drag racing and reckless driving charges and rescued by police.
Fisher-Titus Hospital Norwalk welcomed four babies New Year’s Day with Neil Paul Johannsens first son of 6 lb 2 1/2 oz born at 9:37 a.m. to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johannsen, Christine born in 1970, and two more un-named newborns plus a daughter for Mrs. Steve Hayes at home before transfer to the hospital.
