In Canton Ohio the Ohio lottery lists prizes for numbers 412 389 and 751 with winnings up to 300000 drawing and 15000. In Dallas William D Martin buys Mayor Wes Wise's seized 1966 automobile for 760 at public auction and returns it to the mayor promising to return it again if repossessed.
A powerful winter storm swept the nation’s midsection, delivering heavy snows and hazardous travel across the mid Mississippi Valley. National Weather Service warnings and travel advisories were issued for parts of Missouri Iowa Illinois Wisconsin and upper Michigan. Six people died in storm related accidents. Separately in California Mary Rowan 23 daughter of comedian Dan Rowan was granted a divorce from actor Peter Lawford 51 after three years of marriage with custody of wedding gifts and no alimony. Nixon expresses anguish but will not comment on Watergate verdicts per attorney advice.
A Democratic caucus plan would move Huron County from the 17th to the 13th district and redraw western Wayne County into Ashbrook's 17th district. It aims to create solid Democratic districts in Columbus Cincinnati and Dayton while pairing Republicans Brown and Guyer in one district.
The Mason's Department Stores parent company filed bankruptcy. The Norwalk outlet says its store will not be affected and remains a top money maker. The group owns 54 stores and plans to close 18 unprofitable locations while creditors await payments through the courts.

Norwalk residents gain right to inspect student files within 45 days of written requests. Parents or guardians and students 18 or older may review records. personnel-file releases require written consent. Dr. Albion V. Gotaas notes potential for few requests but supports transparency.
A government advisory panel recommends a sharp rise in Social Security taxes and possible benefit cuts to save the system. Proposals include increasing the wage base tax from 14100 to 24000 and raising the retirement age from 65 to 68 by 2005, with future COLA abolitions and other benefit reductions. The 13 member panel was appointed by HEW Secretary Caspar Weinberger, chaired by W Allen Wallis.
Washington reports December unemployment at 7.1 percent, the highest since 1958, with about 6.5 million Americans out of work. The rise, driven by auto layoffs and coal strike impact, spans most worker groups and could prompt new economy measures in Congress and a State of the Union proposal.
