First SSI Checks Go Out Under New Federal Program

Gasoline prices rise nationwide as costs creep up
Gasoline at the pump climbed to over 90 cents a gallon in many areas with warnings of as much as 11 cents more by March. Energy chief William E. Simon said U S oil consumption lagged forecasts by 500 000 barrels daily for the week and 800 000 for the last four weeks. In D C area some stations hit 57.9 cents per gallon as higher crude costs pass through.

Clocks To Move Ahead Across Nation This Spring
Almost all Americans set clocks one hour forward next Sunday as Daylight Saving Time begins. The country will stay on DST until October 1975. Congress requires DST nationwide with Alaska and Hawaii exempt. Fourteen mainland states with two time zones may exempt one zone. States may seek exemptions or have legislatures act.

President Nixon planned to sign a two step 11 percent boost for 30 million retired or disabled workers widows and dependents before a midnight deadline. Tex Ritter Dies During Jail Visit
Tex Ritter an 85 film veteran and six decade singing star died of a massive heart attack Wednesday night while visiting a friend in the Davidson County Jail. He was 67 and the cause was a heart attack. Services are set for Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Nederland Texas. Roy Acuff called him a giant in the industry and noted his influence on country music. He once toured radio in Houston started in 1929 and later ran a successful restaurant chain. In 1970 he contested the Republican Senate nomination from Tennessee. Last month he met with President Nixon at the White House and presented CMA tribute album excerpts.
