Rookie trooper dies chasing speeders on icy Ohio Turnpike

Patrolman John D. Birchem, 22, a June 1966 graduate, was killed when his cruiser slid on ice during a pursuit of two speeding cars on the Ohio Turnpike. He leaves a wife Donna and an eight month old son John. Turnpike officials condemned the drivers' role in his death.

Avon Lake youths missing on Lake Erie after ice ride

Air and ground searchers resumed the hunt for Richard Myers and John Stanley both 13 and 15 who disappeared after planning a lake bicycle ride. A skater and a patrolman spotted them on the ice and warned them off as Coast Guard helicopters from Detroit joined the search.

Henry Luce Dies Leader of Time Life Fortune

Henry Luce head of the Time Life Fortune publishing empire died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix at age 68 after a coronary occlusion. He became ill at his Biltmore Estates winter home and was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. MST. Luce, a Yale classmate of Briton Hadden, helped launch Time in 1923 and shaped 20th century journalism.

Berlin Milan High School to Stay One District Despite Redistricting Talks

Berlin Milan school superintendent Charles J Lindecamp told the PTA that proposed state districting under study by the Ohio legislature would not affect the Berlin Milan school building. The district remains single with changing administration. Joseph Hurley explained federal funding under NDEA and ESEA, noting $20,000 Title I funding for a summer reading program that will continue this year.

Car Rams Train and Driver Escapes in Norwalk Crash

A 21 year old Norwalk man escaped with minor injuries after driving into the side of a moving freight train on North West Street. Paul M. Sickinger received minor cuts and was treated at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. He was cited for failure to stop within safe distance. A 73 year old woman was treated after her car was hit broadside by a semi trailer truck at about 4 30 p m Monday.
