Comedian Johnny Carson was named Man of the Year by Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Club on Friday. The Tonight Show host received the annual honor in a ceremony captured by UPI photographers.

The Cleveland School Board pitches a three phase desegregation plan to Chief Judge Battisti. It would require cross town bus transport for up to 80 000 students starting September 1978 in schools with about 40 000 pupils and 1979 for the remaining 40 000.
The 846 foot tanker Hawaiian Patriot sank 360 miles west of Honolulu after an explosion. It had leaked 5 million gallons of light crude oil and carried 30 million gallons aboard. Coast Guard warned a ruptured hold could create a slick exceeding the Torrey Canyon spill of 1967.

A fire at the 6000-bed Hotel Rossiya in Moscow trapped hundreds of guests including 164 Americans from Case Western University Alumni Association. At least 17 dead with death toll possibly rising to 50 60 as crews search 250 yard corridors after the blaze lasted over five hours.
