An airliner from Far Eastern Air Transport caught fire and crashed on the outskirts of a town near Tainan. All 36 aboard died, including five Americans. The two engine turboprop had departed Kaohsiung and reported engine trouble ten minutes after takeoff before the crash.
Stillman College president ordered students home to end the boycott but they locked inside a campus building. He postponed the order after talking with parents as Berkeley moves to suspend violations under a state of extreme emergency. Israeli air raids on Syria sparked a two hour battle with Mirage jets and Soviet Ss losses while Damascus reports three Israeli planes downed.
President Nixon said he would hold a summit with Soviet leaders in due course after finalizing a united Western program on world issues. He spoke at the NATO Council in Brussels amid light heckling and emphasized work over ceremony during a tour that includes Brussels Rome and Berlin. The White House noted concern over North Vietnamese offensives as Paris peace talks loom.

Saigon reports more than 50 rocket and mortar strikes on South Vietnamese cities and bases during a second post holiday offensive. Ky warned SAIGON could retaliate with air raids on Hanoi if attacks persist. The two day campaign has produced heavy Viet Cong and North Vietnamese casualties and U.S. losses.

On Sunday night resident Tome Penrose reported a bobcat like animal behind Garfield Apartments on West Main Street. Deputy Sheriff John Warner investigated with Penrose but found nothing with a patrol car spotlight. Thursday morning Maplehurst School Principal William Ruby said two cat like animals were seen by students and teachers.
