Lt. Gen. Do Cao Tri, top South Vietnamese commander in Cambodia, died when his helicopter exploded on takeoff near Tay Ninh. Eight others were aboard including four American officers Newsweek correspondent Francois Sully, and three Vietnamese crewmen. One survivor reported.
Nationwide weather havoc stalled travel from Kansas to Iowa as 50 mph winds piled snowdrifts. Tornadoes hit Indiana Ohio the Carolinas and Georgia leaving multiple deaths and injuries.
United Press International reports high winds and two tornadoes hit the Columbus area causing substantial damage. At least four people were injured. a Bexley attendant described a funnel cloud splitting and touching down near houses. Floods receded in southern Ohio as rivers overflowed elsewhere and many roads remained blocked.
Cloudy with snow flurries today and tonight with highs in the 30s and lows around 25 to 30. Partly cloudy Wednesday with morning flurries and highs in the 30s. Precipitation 80 percent today, 20 percent Wednesday afternoon. Winds shift from 10 to 20 mph today to 15 to 25 mph tonight and Wednesday. Norwalk highs 46, lows 30. Births include a son to Mr and Mrs Gust Fisher at 116 E Seminary St and a daughter to Mrs Terry Tucker in Norwalk. Marriage license applicants are Donald L Reed Jr and Elizabeth A Griffin of Norwalk. Death notices for Arthur G Walton 61 Monroeville, Gladys Johnson 55 Strucker, Mae V Garner 62 57 Grove Ave.
Ohio Public Expenditure Council reports total county property tax income rose to 7 446 637 in 1970 up 524 020 from 1969 while municipalities in the county lost 14 784. School districts led gains with 436 499 increases to 5 712 332. County 653 239 up 88 841 and townships 13 468 more to 351 938.
Willard High School was closed at 2:30 p.m. Monday after a bomb threat was received. Police searched the building with officers posted outside while students stayed home. A second scare weeks earlier prompted a brief dismissal.
Norwalk High reports 165 students and four teachers absent from 940 total as influenza like illness drains both buildings. At Norwalk Junior High many calls clogged lines as pupils fell ill and phoned home. Health officials monitor, no closedowns planned.
Hollywood's Academy nominations list shows Airport and Patton tied with 10 each for best picture. Love Story earns seven nominations. acting honors go to Melvyn Douglas James Earl Jones Jack Nicholson Ryan O Nea l George C Scott Jane Alexander Glenda Jackson Ali MacGraw Sarah Miles Carrie Snodgrass Karen Black Lee Grant Helen Hayes Salley Kellerman Maureen Stapleton.
The sheriff's department investigates vandalism in Centerton and Havana with rural mailboxes broken or thrown through car and bar windows. Car lot damage reported at Matteson's in Centerton. Deputy Hank Tappel remained on scene at press time.
