Laycock seeks Norwalk board seat after withdrew candidacy

Attorney Jeffery Laycock of 204 E Main filed petitions to run for a full-term on the Norwalk Board of Education in November after withdrawing his earlier name for the vacancy left by Michael Myers. He said he has not ruled out running later. Board President Frederick Waugh and Vice President Dorothy Delianides terms end this year, neither having filed petitions. Fourth Ward councilman Robert Markel of 16 N West St filed for re election, becoming the first council member to indicate re entry. All council seats expire this year.

Ehove Enforces Contract as Teacher Refuses to Quit

Ehove school board rejected Kerry Jett’s resignation effective February 23 citing contract obligations and potential harm to students. Superintendent Christ stated contracts must be honored, noting mid year vacancy issues and limited qualified vocational instructors. The district faces possible certification risks for Jett and contemplates next steps while addressing ventilation and safety upgrades in welding classes and planning a June operating levy with budget shortfall projected.

Berry brothers take over Homestead Inn in Avery

Berry's Restaurant Inc. acquired the Homestead Inn Restaurant on U.S. 250 in Avery from Steve and Sally Poling. Rob ert Berry says they will operate today with current staff and plan menu changes and a facelift. The purchase, not disclosed, includes leasing the building from Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Henry. The Berry family has run Norwalk's downtown restaurant since 1946, with Jim and Bob buying in 1961. Parents of eighth graders meet guidance counselors at 7 p.m. in the junior high library to discuss next year’s registration. Sandusky St Mary visits Norwalk wrestlers at 7:30 p.m. at the junior high.

Carter Cuts Hit County in Budget Tug of War

Huron County faces shrinking federal support as President Carter trims social services under Title 20. At a Norwalk hearing, social services supervisor Judith Csehi warned promising new programs is unlikely, with state officials urging agencies to await May word on local shares. The county serves about 600 people monthly and relies on Title 20 funds for day care, home care, transportation, foster care, and elder services, with agencies seeking 15 000 for transportation and others requesting increased support to sustain detox follow up, homemaker services, and counseling amid rising operating costs.
