Johannes F. Herman 27 of Garden City was found guilty by a Wayne County jury of killing Rags a 1 year old half poodle owned by an Inkster woman. Sentencing set for March 27. Gloria Norris testified she left Rags at the Dearborn Heights store and returned to find the dog unconscious and dying. A vet said the death resulted from blows with a blunt instrument.
Emil Narick, a union attorney, trails incumbent I W Abel by about 2 to 1 in unofficial USW presidential ballot counts and says the results are only projections. He claims he has 69 percent of actual votes cast in the gradennial election across locals in the United States Canada and Puerto Rico.

Washington UPI reports that 1,100 top Civil Service workers received hidden pay raises totaling about 2 million dollars annually. The increases accompany a 21.5 million Valentine’s Day boost for Congress and top officials, not listed in Johnson’s pay order.
Johnson order boosts pay from $28 000 to $30 239 for civil service staff in Congress and raises top salaries from $30 000 to $62 500 for lawmakers and judges. About 2 047 officials gain immediate increases with another $3 billion slated for July. Rep H R Gross opposes the package demanding accountability.
Willard receives 1.039 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a Northwest Ohio water reservoir as part of a 4.629 million plan. Construction starts within three months and lasts 15 months on a 500 acre site near Route 61 and Townline Road.
Vito Genovese, a leading underworld figure and reputed Mafia boss, died in his sleep at 2:30 a.m. EST in a federal prison medical center. He was 71, serving a 15-year narcotics sentence after transfer from Leavenworth for a chronic heart condition. A daughter, a son, and a brother were with him at death. Genovese allegedly convened the Apalachin meeting of mobsters in 1957.
Dr Tilmon H. Smith 86 of 193 Park Ave New London died Thursday at New London Hospital after a brief illness. He practiced medicine 45 years on staff of New London and Southern Lorain County Hospitals and served as Huron County health officer. Funeral 2 pm Sunday Eastman Funeral Home with Masonic services 7:30 pm Saturday. Burial Grove Street Cemetery.

In Philadelphia a man freed from prison after three years for raping a University of Pennsylvania professor's wife was revealed to be mistaken identity. Gordon J. Ragan, 22, shared a striking similarity with Fred A. Conyers, also 22, who confessed to the crime.

The Ashtabula Star-Beacon dedicates Valentine s Day 1969 to Congress members calling the 41 percent pay raise for all members a costly gesture. It notes this year’s approval follows a 30 day window after presidential recommendation making the pay raises law.
