Cleveland wide receiver Paul Warfield, chilly weather noted, eyes a hot performance against the Baltimore Colts in the NFL Championship. A UPI caption frames Warfield warming his hands as anticipation builds for the Sunday showdown.
Ohio State University's student newspaper will be printed and edited by Lantern staffers in Los Angeles ahead of the Rose Bowl. The edition will be produced at California State College in Los Angeles, offset printed in Glendale, and distributed in Pasadena Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles.
Cpl. Lonnie Short of Norwalk returning home from Great Lakes Hospital for Christmas after being wounded in Vietnam. He arrived with crutches and will return to hospital January seventh. His parents praised the homecoming as the best possible Christmas gift.
Apollo 8 pilots Borman Lovell and Anders rode the spacecraft toward a historic return after circling the moon ten times. Flight director Windler reported satisfactory entry conditions with a minor speed adjustment planned before a bull’s eye splashdown in the Pacific.
John C. Stonesifer of NASA predicts a bullseye splashdown for the Apollo 8 astronauts near the equator about 1,000 miles southwest of Hawaii. Recovery ships guard a wide area as weather outlook remains satisfactory and sharks pose minimal threat to operations.
United Press International reports a small warming trend starting Friday in Ohio after a week of bitter temperatures. The U S Weather Bureau expects mid-50s near the Ohio River, fading to the mid-30s in the northeast and at the far north.
Don McNeill will sign off The Breakfast Club this Friday ending a 35 year run that began June 23 1933 as The Pepper Pot. He says the program 55 minutes of music gags and audience banter no longer fits modern tastes.
Mostly cloudy and not very cold with light snow today and tonight. Highs in the upper teens to low 20s, tonight lows in the mid to upper teens. Friday snow mix with rain and rising temperatures to the mid 30s to low 40s. Saturday rain or showers then colder with winds 5 to 20 mph. Births and deaths listed for local residents.
In Quang Tri near Alpine base six miles from the Laotian border a nine foot 400 pound tiger attacked a sleeping Marine. The tiger was shot dead by a Marine patrol after it mauled the soldier who survived with serious neck and shoulder wounds. A second tiger may be the same animal blamed for a November killing.
Carol G. Rogerson president said construction will begin in spring for a 50 bed one story extended care center to serve convalescent patients of all ages in Norwalk. The 300000 project will be built behind the Twin Maples Nursing Home at 192 West Main St where elderly patients are cared for. Rogerson, a Berea life insuranceman, helped buy Twin Maples last April from Mr and Mrs William Sickles. The new facility will include private semi private and ward rooms and preliminary engineering is under Richard Mutz of Norwalk. A contractor has not yet been chosen.
Fireman David Caprara suffered a minor accident while leaving the station in Norwalk en route to a 103 Jefferson fire. A southbound car driven by 17 year old Willie E. Walker III of Sandusky struck the truck, breaking its right front bumper. The trailer home fire was confined to the trailer and blamed on a torch thawing frozen pipes.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated a Washington Road crash near Norwalk where a man dressed as Santa Claus left the scene. Robert E. Holm, 26, of Norwalk, ran off the road and struck a highway marker but was not injured and no charges were filed.
Buford Pusser, famed McNairy County sheriff, shot and killed Charles Rush Hamilton after Hamilton fired on him inside a Tennessee home. Pusser, wounded earlier by gunfire, refused hospitalization and said Hamilton had a long criminal record including murder and prison terms. His exploits inspired The Ballad of Buford Pusser.
