About 600 residents fled their homes in Jacksonville as chlorine leaked from the Apperson Chemical Co plant before Christmas. Fire crews sealed the leak and moved evacuees to a nearby high school gym, where carols offered temporary solace amid the danger.
An explosion on Christmas night destroyed a six story Moscow building section while residents slept. Nine people were killed and several injured, with the toll confirmed by Evening Moscow after earlier police reports. The blast was widely heard and reported abroad.
William Stein, 43, aide to Mayor Carl B. Stokes, remained hospitalized after a shoulder wound from a .32 caliber pistol. Prosecutor Charles Merchants planned to decide on charges after statements from Stein and a 52-year-old man held for questioning.
In Columbus on Christmas Eve an armed masked intruder kidnapped a 14 year old girl from an east side home as her sister and brother and mother prepared for Christmas. Police say the girl suffered back cuts and was hysterical upon returning home early Monday. Her father was minutes from arrival when the incident occurred.
United Press International reports during the Christmas period 1967 on American highways 673 people died in traffic crashes, 67 in fires, 3 in plane crashes and 57 in other incidents for a total of 800 fatalities by 9 a.m. EST. The toll neared the record 720 deaths set during Christmas 1965 and exceeded last year’s figure.
Stanley Clause 56 known as Santa by friends was robbed at knifepoint by a robber on Hough Avenue. The thief demanded money, took Clause s coin purse but fled after saying it lacked funds. Clause was hospitalized at the VA after the incident.
Daniel Bruce Brown 19 ran naked with a sword on a residential street in Sunnyvale. A police patrolman was slashed and another wounded as officers attempted to subdue him. Brown died about 20 minutes after being struck by four bullets.
Athens reports the Greek military regime considers Constantine possibly returning before year’s end to reclaim the throne he fled after a failed counter coup. Retired Gen Hara lambos Potamianos, ally to the royal family, arrived in Athens Monday night from Rome with the 27 year old monarch after a third Rome visit in ten days on government orders.

Romney toured the Da Nang base, spoke with Cushman’s deputy, and planned travel to the Mekong Delta before Indonesia.
U S Air Force Navy and Marine planes resumed bombing after the 24 hour ceasefire, hitting more than 300 trucks headed south for war material. A Marine F9 Cougar was shot down but crew rescued. Reports say 91 trucks destroyed and 41 damaged in six hours post ceasefire with 118 incidents in South Vietnam during the truce. Communists vow a three day cease from the weekend.
The nation enjoyed a white Christmas with snow from the Rockies to the Appalachians and record cold. In Washington low areas flooded as river levels rose, while residents hurried to sandbag Snohomish River defenses near Everett. Collins post office bids seek a new office site and land purchase in Cincinnati with eight year lease and renewal options.
North Vietnam leader Ho Chi Minh urged rallygoers in bomb scarred Hanoi to view Johnson's latest peace offer as a trick and asserted the U.S. is being defeated. State media praised unity, while Nhan Dan said the proposal aimed to prolong the war.
Vermilion police held Paul Smith 33 on first degree manslaughter charge for fatally shooting his brother Donald K. Smith 30 during a Christmas gathering at 408 Parkland Blvd. The coroner said the shotgun wound pierced the neck and exited the head. Bond set at 10000. Children were reportedly present as officers planned further evidence review. The case headed to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in London. The Huron County Republican Organization reported 1600 spent on November 7 candidates.
