President Carter signed a law raising 227 billion dollars in new Social Security taxes over ten years to bolster the ailing program that pays 33 million people annually. The measure hikes taxes for 107 million workers and employers, with Carter calling it a measured burden to aid families in need.

Congressmen Take Cash? Park to Testify on Influence Buying

South Korean rice dealer Tongsun Park, returning from Seoul to testify on influence buying, may implicate one or two current congressmen and 14 to 18 former lawmakers. An associate said Park’s evidence could show about six congressmen took five thousand dollars or more from South Korean agents and point to possible wrongdoing by at least one former Democratic leader in the House.

Norwalk Sells Out of Christmas Trees Amid Shortages

Norwalk and surrounding areas experience a tree shortage as dealers report sold out supplies. Kroger and local farms say demand spiked from out-of-town buyers, with prices ranging from 6.50 to 29 dollars and some retailers unable to restock before Christmas. Charles Black of Roselle Ward’s farm notes 600 trees sold last weekend. Bob Sutherland reports much higher sales and plans to stay open through Christmas.

Orthopedically handicapped students from Milan and Sandusky along with Huron County peers enjoyed a spontaneous bowling party Monday at Norwalk Bowling Center. They cheered each roll, celebrated falling pins, and even used a ramp built by Richard Hart to roll the ball.
