Comedian Bob Hope arrived in Saigon under tight security and was whisked to Pleiku to begin his annual Christmas tour for American servicemen. The first show was set for troops of the 4th Infantry Division at their base camp with no advance notice security.
In Austintown Ohio on a Sunday night vandals damaged 33 of 38 school buses by removing distributor rotors and letting air out of tires, forcing many public school students to arrive about two hours late. Affected buses were parked near the school bus garage.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk says De Gaulle's withdrawal has not crippled NATO and that the Atlantic alliance is ready to build a new future without France. He spoke after a NATO conference in Paris and planned to carry the message to President Johnson.
In Greensburg Indiana a state trooper William Rayner age 30 was fatally wounded when he and a deputy sheriff stopped a car carrying two prison escapees. One fugitive was killed and the other captured after allegedly holding a family captive for six hours.

In Indianapolis eight people died as a gasoline tanker crashed in heavy traffic near St. Andrews church. Witnesses described flames rising fifty feet and a napalm-like fireball. victims included bystanders and workers while responders fought the blaze. Police noted the cause was still under investigation.
Four antiwar activists from the United States flew to Hanoi with a North Vietnamese invitation to view bombed villages, hospitals, and schools. They planned talks with President Ho Chi Minh and captured U.S. pilots, traveling via Peking, aware they may lose passports.
In St Louis Missouri three teenaged boys were shot to death at a birthday party after an argument turned violent. A fourth boy was in critical condition. Arrests included Richard Otis Daniel McNamee and two juveniles. The victims were Gary Ratliff 18 Michael J Tinsley 17 and Joseph F Michaels 17. The shooting occurred at a remote party location and a .25 caliber pistol was used.
William Manchester, author of The Death of a President, denies betraying Mrs Kennedy or violating a signed agreement with Robert Kennedy. He plans to argue next week that the Kennedy family released him from the contract last summer. He seeks time to let history judge his work.
In a Reflector feature, the Walter Marshall family at 69 Eastwood shares their three part Christmas tradition. Jean Marshall age four dreams of a stove and sink to cook like Mama, while son David ages two awaits Santa. The clan gathers with relatives near Elyria on Christmas Eve, returns home for morning gifts, and ends with Mrs. Marshall’s parents near New London. Walt, a Columbia Gas Co. representative, saves vacation for the holidays. The household has gifts bought and cookies baked, with tree and house decorated, and Jeannie still hoping for a Santa meeting after a local parade.
Norwalk Chamber of Commerce announced winners for its Christmas Decorating Contest judged Sunday night. First prizes went to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kerner of 100 Wooster St. and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fries of 97 W. Washington St. A life-size Santa with sleigh and reindeer won most beautiful, while a nativity with live sheep claimed most unusual. Second and third prizes went to Tom Doughty Sr. and Mrs. Edwin Zureich, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wechter respectively. Prizes ranged from 25 to 5 dollars.
