American and British pressure could not restart talks for Constantine I to reclaim the Greek throne. The ruling junta in Athens and the king, exiled in Rome since Thursday, failed to agree on terms for his return, making the king's return "out of the question."
UPI reports American jets delivered a massive blow on Hanoi in the fifth straight day of bombing. Tass described heavy bombing and strafing of the northeastern sector as a barbaric raid on the North Vietnamese capital.
Rep. Melvin Laird predicts Nelson Rockefeller and Richard Nixon as the two finalists for the 1968 Republican presidential nomination. Laird, chairman of the House Republican Conference, spoke on ABC Issues and Answers amid intensifying chatter over Rockefeller as a leading possible candidate for the Miami convention next August.
Fayette Mississippi reports Jewish philanthropist John Factor of Los Angeles explains his gift of 20000 to hungry and discriminated against Negro families in Fayette. He says he cannot help the world but aims to help some people, recalling his own poverty.
Temperatures in Ohio from Tuesday through Saturday will run a bit above normal with highs from the upper 30s in the north to the low 40s in the south. Lows will average 25 to 53. Expect showers Tuesday and midweek, with a rain or snow period toward week’s end. Precipitation about half an inch or more melted.
The Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling barring Air Force Captain Dale E. Noyd from using civilian courts to seek conscientious objector status and a non combat post. Noyd, a Wenatchee Washington native and fighter pilot at Cannon AFB New Mexico, disobeyed an instructor duty leading to court martial proceedings.
State Road Commissioner Burl Sawyers said the cause of the Ohio River Bridge collapse at Point Pleasant will be made public after engineers and designers finalize their findings. He noted that wreckage above the water provided no immediate clues.
A United Airlines Viscount propjet with a crew of three and passengers ran off the end of the north landing strip at Akron Canton Airport while landing from Philadelphia. State police reported no injuries and no damage.

A UPI report from Point Pleasant details the collapse of the Silver Bridge during Friday rush hour. The incident sent cars into the Ohio River and left more than 50 dead or missing. The story notes local concern over the bridge’s stability and cites witnesses and investigators.
Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen was chosen to succeed Harold Holt who disappeared while swimming off Portsea. Governor General Lord Casey announced the appointment effective at 8:10 a.m. EST. McEwen will lead as interim PM until the Liberal Party selects a new leader. Memorials are planned in Melbourne and Canberra.
Republican primary interest grows in Huron County with Richard Garner filing nominating petitions for two county commissioner seats. Incumbents Arthur Herner and Donald Robertson also filed petitions, setting up a potential May primary among three contenders. Garner, an auctioneer and real estate salesman, cites the need for younger balance on the board. Meanwhile Vermilion saw a fatal rear end collision on East Liberty Avenue killing Lola White and injuring others. The county Democratic group spent 513 supporting candidates in the Nov. 7 elections and filings include William Giles for Norwalk council. The courthouse will close only on Christmas and New Year’s Days with early noon closings on Dec 23 and Jan 30. Eugene Mack was reappointed to the Norwalk Civil Service Commission through 1973.
Norwalk considers the Linwood Avenue bridge after a Point Pleasant tragedy renews safety concerns. Former Mayor Louis Frey warned in 1965 about heavy loads on the 2.5 ton limit as rail delays backed up traffic. Engineers last inspected in 1963 with replacement costs estimated at 125000 to 140000 dollars.
Postmaster Russell Grell warns today will be the busiest day of the season at the local post office with heavy mail through Tuesday and tapering by Wednesday. Through Saturday the office had about 14 000 pieces less than last year’s volume, with last year at this time about 214 000 through the cancelling machine and over 200 000 so far this year.
