A five hour Public Utilities Commission of Ohio hearing drew 20 complainants including a volunteer firefighter, businessmen and housewives. They reported failures of a fire alert system, lines out of service after repairs, static and clicking, fading voices, crossed conversations, and abrupt disconnections. Several testified of hours to days trying to place calls, others never getting through despite repeated attempts.

S. Sgt. Daniel W. S. Clark of Oberlin Ohio was found innocent after a witness said he was sick in bed the day of alleged incidents. The 34 year old veteran faced charges of inducing indignities and physical discomforts on recruits at Lackland Air Force Base. two fellow sergeants were found guilty.

Washington via UPI reports Preston Martin head of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board warns Americans face higher mortgage costs next year possibly up to 9.6 percent as relending rates to savings and loan associations rise. Willard area deputy Nicholas Moll 72 is in guarded condition at Willard Area Hospital after his cruiser struck a tree on Route 61 near Townline Road 12. The crash at 6 15 a m was blamed on dirt and loose gravel from nearby construction.
