A government survey says about 2.5 million cigarette smokers stopped smoking between 1966 and 1968 and smoking declined to 38 percent of the population. Young people 17 to 24 show rising rates of never smoking.
Playboy December playmate Gloria Root, 21, of Chicago, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for smuggling hashish found in a car in Alexandropolis. Her companion Corbin Parker, 20, a University of Wisconsin student, received a five year term.
The Senate adopted an amendment to prohibit ground troops in Laos or Thailand using defense funds. The vote 85 to 4 echoes fears of expanding conflict in Southeast Asia and follows a secret session referenced by Senate leaders. A similar provision on the defense authorization bill was dropped in conference.
The Norwalk Municipal Power Plant experienced a 30 minute citywide outage after a fuel oil line ruptured feeding the new generator. Service Director William Mount said moisture in coal caused the switch to fuel oil Monday night and the plant resumed normal operations after repairs.
Warrant Officer David C. Thill of Norwalk earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism on September 13 in Vietnam. He drew enemy fire to protect a reconnaissance helicopter and its crew, exhausting his ammunition and making repeated low dives before a second helicopter could rescue them. Thill, son of Louis and Mrs. Thill, is a Norwalk High School and Miami University alumnus.

Negotiations between Willard City Manager Michael Orenic and police negotiator Phillip M. White Jr. have stalled over salary and fringe benefits. White reports no formal meeting notice despite talk of a gathering tonight. Police and dispatchers have made ten requests including a 20 percent pay rise.

Defense staffer Stewart Ball is removed after laughter erupts at the judge. A witness describes police beating demonstrators during the Balbo clash.
Gov. James A. Rhodes was admitted to University Hospital Columbus for bronchitis and an upper respiratory infection. The office described his condition as good and expected rest and treatment to relieve symptoms soon. This marks his second hospitalization this year following vocal cord surgery last fall.
Christian Winslow Hayden, 21 and son of actor Sterling Hayden, received a 42 month federal prison term for selective service violations. He told reporters he would rather spend his days in jail than compromise his conscience.
In six minutes a Santa Ana Freeway stretch turned into a solid mass of metal as dense fog and a chain reaction caused a 70-car pileup after a tow truck pulled into traffic. Forty five injured, one dead. flights diverted at LAX.
The Firelands Chapter of the American Red Cross intensifies its Write Hanoi campaign to urge humane treatment of American prisoners of war in North Vietnam. Executive director Albert S. Gongos calls for public letters to the Hanoi leadership via airmail with a 25 cent stamp.
Plant Supt Donald Davis cites a broken damper pin as the cause of heavy soot and smoke at the municipal light plant on Sunday. A.J. Riley reported the issue to police. The new boiler was down for maintenance and older equipment used. the damper on the older boiler failed to open fully until the return of the new boiler between 7 and 8 p.m. Sunday.
Mount notes diesel fuels raise smoke and old equipment worsens the issue. Riley and a neighbor alerted him weeks earlier. Mrs. Riley says a today’s heavy smoke returns and clothes are sooted. she recalls a similar, ongoing problem years ago. The Rileys sought county health guidance and were advised to consult city officials.
