State highway officials unveiled a plan for a four lane U.S. 250 from Norwalk to Sandusky crossing the state. A bypass hearing drew about 300 residents at Milan Township Hall. Construction targeted for 1970 71 with land acquisition beginning six to nine months prior.
The Johnson administration’s anti poverty bill totaling 1.6 billion dollars advances from a House subcommittee to the full committee with Senate plans to add at least 300 million. Backers anticipate smooth passage as the measure faces floor action.
The Ohio State Board of Education unanimously raised State School Superintendent Martin Essex salary from 25000 to 40000 dollars to match Regents Chancellor John Miller. The raise follows a legislative action allowing salaries to be tied to the chancellor level.
A wave of buyers flooded London and Paris gold markets amid fears for the U S dollar. A Swiss Credit Bank spokesman said gold buying was twice as high in Swiss banks today compared with Monday though no early figures were available.

A two car crash at West Main and Newton Street at 5 01 p m left two people injured Mrs Tatjani S Sardanoff 33 of 82 W Main St and David Kirk 22 of 14912 Benedict were taken to Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital Sardanoff facing facial injuries and Kirk treated for rib knee and elbow injuries before release Sardanoff cited for failure to yield the right of way in the incident A separate crash on East Elm Street involved John R Kline 1975 Christie cited for failure to stop within a safe distance after hitting a parked car owned by Benjamin J Camp 65 E Elm
U.S. Senator Charles Percy and wife were attacked by guerrillas in a jungle village 90 miles northwest of Saigon. A mortar exploded within 15 feet of Percy as he crawled to a rescue helicopter with four civilian aides. Mrs. Percy was evacuated to safety.
Norwalk Chamber of Commerce and city officials act to keep Norwalk Truck Lines in Norwalk as Mayor Harold Finch plans to meet NTL President Donald Manlowe on his return from a western business trip. Chamber President Ralph Bache notes efforts to address Manlowe’s cited problems.
Charles Barnes Gardiner, a member of Norwalk's prominent family, died after a lingering illness at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital. He was 92, would have turned 93 on December 26, and lived at 133 West Main Street since 1938. Gardiner served as cashier and president in local banks, led Memorial Hospital Board, chaired the draft board in World War I, and sat on boards of Red Cross Firelands Museum and Norwalk Public Library. He attended Norwalk schools and University School in Cleveland, married Myrtle Gebhart in 1902, and survived by two sisters a grandson a great grandson a great granddaughter and a niece. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Norwalk Service Director Morley Price says relocating the truck line would bring street benefits. Auditor Charles Hipp cites 1967 street expenses at $74,945 with total license fee revenue at $178,000 funding the street program. Price notes a city income tax idea is under closer study by councils.
The Salvation Army appeals for used toy donations by December 21 to support its Toy Shop and Christmas Basket program. About 300 used toys have been received. 125 families have applied. Capt. Naomi Drake notes most need is for usable toys as repairs are not feasible. Donations welcome at 48 Benedict Ave daily from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
Timothy M. Finch, 16, son of Norwalk Mayor Harold Finch, was cited into Juvenile Court along with two others after a 3 p.m. crash at Old State Road and Woodlawn Avenue. Timothy admitted Rogely Waite drove. charges include unlicensed driving and false statements to police.
The Price Construction Co. of Norwalk submitted the lowest bid for widening U S 250 at the south edge of Norwalk. Officials say the bid totaled 87,782 dollars, above the estimated 83,600. The project between Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital and the U S 20 bypass adds a center left turn lane. Norwalk covers 25,000 dollars of the cost.
The Norwalk board of education plans a discussion of a possible May levy and a review of 1968 appropriations. Also on the agenda are tuition for an extension course for unlicensed practical nurses, library board trustee nomination, substitute teacher pay, and a policy shift assigning reserve teacher duties to building principals. The meeting starts at 8 p.m. at the administration building.
