Mayor Finch defended the electric department’s finances amid Mrs. Waite’s challenge to a Sandusky Register quote. The council delays bids for selling the electric system awaiting offers by Dec. 18, with one more regular meeting on Dec. 21 to vote.
On Tuesday night four members and an auditor elect attended the city council and administration preview. Councilman Elect Bill Ream Dr Russell Fisher Clifton Cross and Auditor Elect Douglas Colvin were present.
Councilman Domenic Coletta notes no complaints as natural gas rates climb. Columbia Gas contract extends four years and takes effect in 30 days pending Nixon Phase II review. City seeks cost estimates for Hester Street parking lot after valuing land at 29,750 by a Vermilion appraiser, with mayoral projections of paying two to three times that.
Lorain County deputy coroner testified Kelly Earl Wilson died from battered child syndrome with a fatal brain bleed and multiple bruises from varying ages. Pathologist Dr. Robert G. Thomas described bite marks, broken ribs, chest injuries, and head trauma as contributing to the child’s death in the Glenn Damron trial.
Columbus UPI reports 25 persons indicted in the 1970 Kent State campus disorders may seek redress against government officials and the special grand jury. Ohio ACLU leader Niki Schwartz notes cases may be dropped for lack of evidence and questions if suits against grand jurors are possible. Ramsey Clark and Craig Morgan attended the press conference as calls for federal inquiry persist.
City council moved on ordinances Tuesday to hire deputies for the treasurer and auditor and to create a combined city engineer- building inspector position. An office manager post is also anticipated. Councilman Richard Cunningham says the engineer will be a bargain, not exceeding current costs for a part time engineer and inspector. George Cunitz earns 16 dollars per hour as engineer and James Ferris 5600 dollars yearly as inspector.
Council acts on ordinances approving the extension of Bouscau Avenue for a residential development and calls bids on gasoline for city vehicles. The body also adjusts salaries by raising the mayor solicitor and treasurer and lowering the auditor and levies assessments for sidewalk repair.

Gale force winds sparked about a score of brush fires across the northeastern Los Angeles Basin. Firefighters contained all blazes before dawn with only a few homes damaged. 110 units operated at once as outages and downed power lines fed the fires.
McGraw Hill says Howard Hughes taped an autobiography over many months and will publish in March with Life magazine serialization. Hughes Tool Co denies the report, noting no publishing rights were acquired and a formal statement may follow. Dell Publishing owns paperback rights for 1973.
Indian forces closed to 22 miles from Dacca as UN General Assembly urged a halt to fighting and a ceasefire. Pakistan claimed heavy clashes in Kashmir with 102 Indian troops killed and 11 tanks destroyed while the war widened with Jenner operations and a Pakistani civilian government move.
Sen Edmund Muskie announced he would declare his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination on January 4. At the news conference he was joined by Sen John Tunney and California Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti who endorsed him.
