In Beirut and Damascus reports say Syria moved at 9 a.m. to impound all movable and immovable property of the Iraqi Petroleum Co in Syria. The action followed the seizure of the western-owned oil pipeline carrying Iraqi oil to the Mediterranean. A second item notes hypnotist claims triggering a teenager’s deep sleep, with doctors later reviving him.
London Premier Harold Wilson urged international participation in Britain’s limited economic action against Rhodesia amid warnings of possible grave consequences. In Cleveland, former Bay Village Mayor J Spencer Houk appeared before a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury probing the 1954 Marilyn Sheppard murder, with his ex wife Ethel expected to testify.
Norwalk will host a new Hampton Baking Co plant employing about 50 people at the citys industrial park along Route 18 and Old State Road. The project is financed with local bank support and is slated for completion early next spring. Contractors are Roth Bros Construction, with site work beginning today. ownership details remain confidential for about a week.
A 9,000-ton Greek ferry Heraklion sank in a gale off Millos Island in the Aegean. Rescue ships found 44 survivors and two bodies among 281 aboard. The ship ran Crete to Piraeus daily under Aegean Steam Navigation Co since 1965 after being converted from a Scottish-built vessel.
A.J. Baltes of Norwalk was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Ohio Contractors Association annual convention in Columbus. Robert F. Chapin of Chapin and Chapin Norwalk was named association vice-president. Charles F. Alley of Lancaster became the new association president, succeeding Richard H. Peirce of Toledo.
Dr. Sam Sheppard said he would have pulled a pistol and waited for a guard to shoot him if found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife Marilyn in 1955. He carried a Mauser pistol into the Cleveland courtroom concealed on his person and planned suicide by action if the verdict went against him. The jury acquitted him, sparing a return to Ohio State Penitentiary where he served nine years. He spoke at a news conference promoting his book Endure and Conquer.
Ohio University upset Indiana 91 90 as John Schroeder banked a left handed hook with three seconds left. The 6 foot 9 center scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds amid a 1000 strong Norwalk crowd cheering his performance. Schroeder is a senior multi sport letter winner from Norwalk Ohio and the son of John and Mrs. Schroeder.
The man, identified as Sheppard, first described grabbing a pistol belonging to his second wife Ariane during a Wednesday television appearance in court. It remained unclear whether his intent was self harm or vengeance in the courtroom.

Two 15-year-old boys escaped from a Huron County juvenile detention room at Benedict Avenue using a window. One had escaped a week earlier and the pair, shoeless and underdressed, were sought by the sheriff and Norwalk police while awaiting transfer to the Ohio Youth Commission. They previously used a bed wire to force the door and had earlier stolen a car in South Norwalk.
A gas stove explosion triggered a blaze that collapsed the Yesildere district barracks of the Turkish 3rd Army in Dumlu near Erzurum. Sixty five soldiers died and over 100 were wounded. many are in serious condition at the army field hospital.
