First Lt William L Calley Jr the only man officially accused in the My Lai killings was told by his civilian lawyer not to talk about his involvement when questioned by Pentagon investigators. The questioning aimed to determine if the army inquiry after the March 16 1968 incident amounted to a whitewash.
Capt. Ernest L. Medina, commander linked to My Lai massacre, files a 110 million libel suit against Time Inc publisher of Time and Life. F Lee Bailey says Time article questions why no charges were filed. Suit seeks 100 million punitive and 10 million compensatory damages. Time has 20 days to reply.

Norwalk High School art students decorate Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital windows for a Christmas display now in its 12th year. Eight girls from Mrs. Christy’s class vie for prizes as Denise Dent and Jeanne Williamson lead in creative scenes, while Denise More notes few boys participate. Separately, 16-year-old Robert Bauman remains in serious condition at Elyria Memorial after being struck on Seminary Street, in intensive care.
Mount completed a week long traffic engineering and safety course offered by the Ohio State University College of Engineering. The program followed the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices with sessions from 8 30 a m to 5 p m and a Tuesday evening extra two hour class. About 40 attendees joined 18 instructors. Topics included traffic lighting walk lights striping cross walks accident analysis and sign upgrades and removals. Mount said the sessions were very interesting and applicable to Norwalk.
Six Americans and five South Vietnamese including Col Nguyen Ba Lien, head of the 24th special tactical zone, were killed when their Huey helicopter was shot down north northeast of Kontum during a joint operation. Lien led troops in the Hill 875 battle in 1967, a deadly engagement that left hundreds dead on both sides west of Dak To.
Robert Summerlin 25 of Parsons Street pleaded not guilty in Common Pleas Court to selling obscene books. A secret grand jury indictment followed weeks of complaints about Summerlin's store. Bond set at 1500 cash or 3000 property. hearing slated January 6.
The Senate debated a broad tax reform bill loaded with amendments hoping to pass before a possible presidential veto. The measure adds a 15 percent across the board Social Security increase effective Jan 1 with March paid retroactive checks, raising typical benefits from 97 to 112 dollars for singles and from 170 to 196 for couples.
Larry A. MacDonald 22 and Bobby D. Lykins 21, both of Willard, were injured Friday when MacDonald’s car overturned three times on Route 103. They were taken to Willard Hospital. MacDonald was cited for reckless driving. Both are listed in fair condition.
