Plastic coating shows promise to prevent tooth decay
A two year study reported in the July issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association finds a plastic coating applied twice yearly to teeth can reduce decay by 86 percent. Researchers Eriberto Cueto and Michael Buonocore of Eastman Dental Dispensary tested the coating on hundreds of children, coating 601 teeth with the preventative and 601 teeth without it. The coating, a clear liquid and filler mix, does not show on the teeth and is not yet commercially available.
