Matron Katherine Wood Found Dead in Thailand Silk Tycoon Case

Mrs Katherine Thompson Wood 74 a Pennsylvanian society figure and sister of James H W Thompson was found beaten to death at her Kennett Square estate police said. She had been savagely struck on the head with a heavy weapon and died from skull injuries. Two guard dogs in the home were unharmed.

Viet Cong ambush near Saigon kills GIs and seizes civilians

Viet Cong guerrillas attacked 800 U S assault troops near Saigon killing eight and wounding 44 in a 10 hour battle. Officials said the raid included a civilian massacre and 39 hostages aimed at disrupting South Vietnam elections as President Johnson’s election team observed the scene.

County to Invest More Funds Locally

Fire Damages Norwalk Plant

Fire at Janesville Cotton Mills on St. Mary's Street caused about 2000 dollars in damage. Firefighters arrived at 6 22 a m and limited damage to a machine used in making cotton pads. The report notes no further injuries or extensive damage beyond the machine.

Half Of Young Trees Die In Norwalk Planting

Norwalk planted 300 six foot maples last spring and half have died. City Service Director Morley Price says an adjustment is sought and replacements may be furnished next spring. Two sources supplied the trees and one batch may have been faulty. Price plans residents to request and care for saplings. Project cost, including labor, about $800.

More Students To Ride Buses

Norwalk schools will bus 1830 students this year up from 1837? No, increase to 540 additional riders. A seventh regular bus has been added to cover the rise from last year's 1367 students. A new shuttle run will transport 540 children to elementary schools, with pickups at 8 30 and classes starting at 9.

County Deliberates New Tax Authority in Huron County

Huron County Commissioners adopt a wait and see stance on a new state taxing power due to take effect Friday. Gov James Rhodes is set to sign a bill granting a one percent sales tax a two percent utility tax on non business bills a real estate transfer tax and a $5 vehicle registration fee. Norwalk California will send representation to Norwalk Ohio for its 150th birthday sesquicentennial. Mayor Pete H Fogarty accepted an invitation from the Norwalk Sesqui centennial Committee. The committee approved a 9400 budget with 7400 from local gifts for parade decor and office costs.
