Firefighters in 120 degree heat claim 95 percent containment of the 6,000 acre Castaic fire in Los Angeles County with full control expected by nightfall. A 4,000 acre Piru blaze is 65 percent contained as crews battle the flames near Piru.
Mrs Katherine Thompson Wood 74 a Pennsylvanian society figure and sister of James H W Thompson was found beaten to death at her Kennett Square estate police said. She had been savagely struck on the head with a heavy weapon and died from skull injuries. Two guard dogs in the home were unharmed.
Viet Cong guerrillas attacked 800 U S assault troops near Saigon killing eight and wounding 44 in a 10 hour battle. Officials said the raid included a civilian massacre and 39 hostages aimed at disrupting South Vietnam elections as President Johnson’s election team observed the scene.
A fiery black power speech by militant Negro leader H. Rap Brown prompted bottle throwing in Camden New Jersey. At least one store was looted before police restored order. Five people were arrested including one for carrying a concealed butcher knife.
The United Auto Workers identify Ford Motor Co as the likely strike target with General Motors Corp also considered as a possible main adversary. President Walter P. Reuther was expected to announce the decision at 5 30 p m.
In Arlington Virginia UPI reports George Lincoln Rockwell's body was secretly cremated at a local funeral home. His followers then smuggled the ashes to their hilltop headquarters after failing to find a grave site following a 24 hour search.
UPI reports anti Mao rebels backed by army troops threaten a 10 day bloodbath in Canton to wipe out pro Mao red guards aided by the air force and navy. Travellers say Canton is in virtual anarchy as officials rush to Beijing for emergency meetings to avert a civil war starting Friday.
Tonight is partly cloudy and cooler with a low in the 40s. Friday will be fair with little temperature change. Readouts show 8 p.m. humidity at 87 percent and 8 a.m. Wednesday at 84 percent. Births report a girl to Mr and Mrs Roger Brown of 22 Morley Drive. Deaths list Dora F Stiles 78 of Berlin Heights and Mrs Helen Cleveland 60 of 351/2 E Monroe St.
Huron County plans to shift investments from treasury bills to local banks after a January bid process. Commissioner remarks note $1.35 million in inactive funds, including $750k in treasury bills and $600k in banks, will be reallocated to bolster the local economy and bank deposits next year.
National Transportation Safety Board hearings opened at Oberlin College on Sunday’s parachute deaths. Pilot Robert Karns testified he feared disaster after dropping 19 jumpers, noting water sightings and radar readings guiding him toward Ortner’s Airport.

Fire at Janesville Cotton Mills on St. Mary's Street caused about 2000 dollars in damage. Firefighters arrived at 6 22 a m and limited damage to a machine used in making cotton pads. The report notes no further injuries or extensive damage beyond the machine.
Norwalk planted 300 six foot maples last spring and half have died. City Service Director Morley Price says an adjustment is sought and replacements may be furnished next spring. Two sources supplied the trees and one batch may have been faulty. Price plans residents to request and care for saplings. Project cost, including labor, about $800.
Norwalk schools will bus 1830 students this year up from 1837? No, increase to 540 additional riders. A seventh regular bus has been added to cover the rise from last year's 1367 students. A new shuttle run will transport 540 children to elementary schools, with pickups at 8 30 and classes starting at 9.
Huron County Commissioners adopt a wait and see stance on a new state taxing power due to take effect Friday. Gov James Rhodes is set to sign a bill granting a one percent sales tax a two percent utility tax on non business bills a real estate transfer tax and a $5 vehicle registration fee. Commissioners say they have not yet discussed using the authority and will study the law and actions of other counties before deciding. Don Robertson worries the new power adds county duties.
Norwalk California will send representation to Norwalk Ohio for its 150th birthday sesquicentennial. Mayor Pete H Fogarty accepted an invitation from the Norwalk Sesqui centennial Committee. The committee approved a 9400 budget with 7400 from local gifts for parade decor and office costs.
