Castel Gandolfo Italy Pope Paul VI delivers a 1500 word appeal for peace during a general audience at his summer residence. He recalls the horrors of World Wars I and II and warns of a frightening crumble in core principles essential for lasting peace.
The Transport Workers Union and Pan American World Airways reached an in principle agreement after 24 hours of round the clock talks, ending a strike that idled the world girdling airline. A spokesman cited intensified negotiations following the 2 am EDT strike call.
Norwalk Fire Department will soon receive an automatic fire call recorder from Northern Ohio Telephone Co. The device will log all incoming fire calls for review in case of doubt or misinstruction. Installation carries a $15 fee plus $12.50 monthly under a three year contract. The system records calls on the fire alarm line and can be played back to verify locations and actions.
UPI reports Sen. Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota withdrew from the vice presidential race and urged President Johnson to choose Sen. Hubert Humphrey. The move essentially seals Humphrey as the leading candidate for the No. 2 spot, while McCarthy had been the main obstacle. Johnson had not publicly named a running mate as of mid morning at the convention.
ATLANTIC CITY UPI Democrats aimed to end public squabbling over Southern convention seats and nominate Lyndon B. Johnson by acclamation for president. Johnson’s running mate was expected to be Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey after a telegram from Eugene J. McCarthy urged the choice. Humphrey, 53, former Minneapolis druggist turned mayor and senator, emerged as the likely vice presidential pick.
Memphis area deputies doubt the 106 year old driver Benjamin Abraham Gary Indiana gave as his age born in Israel and father of 60 with 12 wives. He produced a birth certificate showing 106 and a license. he received a courtesy warning for 59 in a 55 zone.

Mrs. Carl Rendlen denied testimony alleging adultery as the custody dispute over six children opened in Huron County Juvenile Court. Five witnesses testified Rendlen and Herbert Fuller stayed together in hotels in Sandusky and other towns. Fuller claimed they were together, while Rendlen denied intimacy and cited threats. Judge Elaine Mayhew presiding. prior custody rulings had swung between welfare and appeals reversals.
Wayne Burtch aged 18 from Vickery Road died in a one car crash on Wahl Road Margaretta Township at 2 55 a m. His sedan left the road, rolled over 300 feet, and pinned him beneath. He was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital. Erie County Sheriff's Department investigated the incident.
A fire of undetermined origin swept through the north wing of the Hotel Sahara in Las Vegas today. The casino convention hall and theatre lounge were demolished and the executive offices and a kitchen damaged. no injuries were reported.
