Eisenhower in critical but improving condition at Walter Reed

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower showed encouraging progress in his fight for life but remained in critical condition at Walter Reed Army Hospital. A 11 a.m. bulletin said trends toward fewer cardiac irregularities continued through the night. The National Security Council held an emergency White House session on the Czech invasion crisis with talks between Dean Rusk and Soviet ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin lasting 15 minutes after a prior meeting with President Johnson.

May Britt sues for divorce from Sammy Davis Jr

Swedish actress May Britt files for divorce in Santa Monica California claiming illness and unhappiness during nearly eight year marriage to Sammy Davis Jr. The interracial union was Hollywood's first of its kind among top stars and follows a November announced trial separation. Davis had said the separation was initiated by Britt.

Couple Killed In Port Clinton Area Crash

Sharon J. Sharp 20 drove a car that jumped a bridge railing on Old State Route 2 at the Route 2 bypass near Port Clinton. The vehicle skidded along the railing, fell to the medial strip, landed on its top and burst into flames. Robert Peterson 23 also died. Excessive speed cited by Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Woman Found Dead in Car Near Willard Home

Ella Youngs a 62 year old rural Willard resident was found dead in a car from asphyxiation near her home. Deputies reported a plastic hose attached to the exhaust pipe entering the front vent of the vehicle. The death is expected to be ruled a self inflicted act and the body was taken to Myers Funeral Home in Greenwich.

Weather and life events in Norwalk and New London

Weather calls for clear to partly cloudy and warm conditions through Thursday with highs in the 80s and a low near 70. Norwalk reports Tuesday highs near 90 and no rainfall. humidity varies 79 percent at 8 am to 72 percent by 8 pm. Births announce a daughter for Mr and Mrs Richard Hendrickson of New London. Marriage licenses issued to Arden J Lee and Doris A King. Death noted: Glenn C Moore, 65, of Plymouth.

Soviet Invasion Justified By Threat To Socialism

Tass said Czechoslovak leaders requested aid to meet a counterrevolutionary threat to the socialist system. Troops from the Soviet bloc would withdraw when the danger eases and authorities deem further presence unnecessary. The move was framed as protecting Eastern Europe and European peace.

Lebanon Ohio Superintendent Charles Van Duren reported about 800 inmates at the Lebanon Correctional Institution riot overnight, tossing firebombs and rocks. He noted tension linked to a Columbus Penitentiary disturbance hours earlier, though he would not confirm a direct connection.

Richards enters race to challenge Collier for county treasurer

Gregory Richards is named as the Huron County Democratic candidate for county treasurer replacing Douglas Colvin who moved to Colorado. Richards, a Ford Sandusky plant employee and longtime party member, will face incumbent Harold Collier in November. He and his wife Eleanor live at 14 Marion Drive with three children and he has held roles in the county party since 1960.

Four Vehicles In Route 250 Collision South Of Norwalk

Four vehicles were involved in a chain reaction on Route 250 south of Norwalk. Howard E. Miller failed to stop his truck, rear ending Joe Hamilton, pushing him into William L. Austin, which then struck Peter Pangrazio. Frances Hamilton and Nancy and Debra Austin were treated for minor injuries. Miller was cited.

Clarksfield Man Hurt In Route 224 Collision

A Clarksfield man, Karl F. Hanville, 48, is in poor condition with a possible skull fracture after a collision on Route 224 near Route 250. His wife Byrle Hanville, in fair condition with multiple lacerations, also hospitalized. State patrol reports Marvin Mihm, 30, of Van Wert, traveling west at high speed, pursued by a patrolman, caused the crash. Mihm’s car sustained heavy damage and he is in Ashland Hospital with a broken leg and multiple injuries. Investigation ongoing.
