Khanh elected president in Vietnam junta shake up

Maj. Gen Nguyen Khanh was elected president by South Vietnam's military junta and gains control to form a new war cabinet. Cabinet resignations followed, clearing the way to purge neutralist ministers within 30 days. In Washington, the Pentagon said a small number of B26 bombers would aid Congo missions, flown by non Americans.

Space launch delays Syncom-3 mission from Cape Kennedy

A one day delay to Wednesday delays the Syncom-3 satellite launch due to a faulty electrical connection in the Delta rocket. Launch window 6 45 a m to 7 30 a m EST. Separately Moscow eyed a multi astronaut launch and announced a Sputnik aircraft project to take off from the ground and return to an airfield.

Rioting in Dixmoor Brings Tear Gas Fire Hoses to Streets

More than 1 000 Negro rioters hurled concrete at white motorists and clashed with police in Dixmoor over a gin dispute. Two shot, about 60 injured, 31 arrested as stores looted and cars overturned. Police used tear gas fire hoses and dogs. violence spread from Saturday into Sunday.

Fourteen French boys killed in Alps bus crash

A bus carrying fourteen French boy campers and three counselors plunged 220 feet down a ravine near the St Bernard Pass in the French Alps. All 75 aboard were killed or injured, with 49 children and nine adults surviving but many critically hurt. The overloaded bus, carrying 45 capacity, was returning from a Shepherd's Festival after a youth camp outing.
