John Diefenbaker former Canadian prime minister died in his sleep aged 83 after a long political career spanning nearly four decades. He led Canada from 1957 to 1963 and remained a influential figure in national politics.
Fog and light rain lowered fire danger as crews pressed to contain Idaho's Mortar Creek blaze near the Salmon River. Smokejumpers cleared landing zones and extended fire line in the northern sector while 1,300 firefighters fought the 65,300 acre fire in the Idaho Primitive Area.
An investigating commission of experts sought to determine how two Soviet jetliners collided over the Ukraine last Saturday. About 150 people were killed, including an entire soccer team, in what may be the second worst disaster in Soviet aviation history. About 105 employees at Boxboard Packaging Company walked out Wednesday after failing to reach a new contract. Local 731 president Ralph Butler and international rep Bill Crane said talks stalled, with offers below guidelines set by President Carter. The two-year contract expired August 1, and workers returned to the line after a brief pause.
Washington reports a split within the FTC staff over a rule to require pre sale inspections for used cars. Some support mandatory inspections with window stickers detailing major components. A Naples woman, Mrs. Pasqualina Chiasnese, gave birth to eight live babies in Naples Italy the highest recorded number. The octuplets three boys and five girls were transported to Naples hospitals for intensive care while the mother remains in good condition. Previously six births died at birth three years earlier. The Guinness Book reported six as the prior record set in 1974 in Cape Town.
