Two Hurt In Crash At Routes 4 and 20 Bellevue

Two people, Mr and Mrs Wayne A Martin of Sandusky, were seriously injured in a crash at the Routes 4 and 20 intersection near Bellevue. A westbound semi collided with a car crossing Route 4, sending the car into the median. Martin was listed in critical condition with severe head injuries at Bellevue Hospital. his wife’s condition was undetermined. The truck driver Herbert W Goff of LeMoyne was uninjured. The light at the intersection had been out after a truck overturned it last month but was blinking at the time of the crash.

Romney says bombing not to force Hanoi to bargain

Michigan Governor George Romney warns against the idea that U S bombing will pressure North Vietnam into talks. He denies advocating a bombing halt but says the effort has been over escalated and insufficiently limited. Separately IAM leader P L Roy Siemiller urges nationalization if Congress blocks strikes against railroads.

U.S. 101st Traps Communist Regiment Near Da Nang

U S 101st Airborne Division traps a 1200 to 1500 man Communist regiment in four days of fighting below Da Nang. Fragmentary battlefield reports say 21 Communists killed today, total 79 since Sunday. Americans suffer 11 dead and 4 wounded. In late fighting near Qui Nhon, 65 North Vietnamese killed in jungle battle with air and artillery support.

Former Norwalk Teacher Edward Van Norman Dies

Edward Van Norman 40 a former reading specialist for Norwalk City Schools died unexpectedly Tuesday of a heart attack while fishing in northern California. He and his family recently moved to Santa Maria where they planned to teach this fall. He is survived by wife Sue and three children Ned Angeline and Karl. Services and burial will be in Santa Maria.

Ohio Senate panel advances omnibus highway safety bill

The Senate Urban and Highway Affairs Committee approved the omnibus highway safety bill, clearing a floor vote next week. The measure, already passed by the House, would revise traffic laws and allow state financed driver education courses, with the Education Department empowered to set up a statewide program.

Fire Destroys Barns On Miliman Road. Family Safe

Early morning fire on Miliman Road destroyed a 30 by 40 foot barn and a 20 by 30 foot utility building. John J. Jansen and his wife and five children slept 300 feet away as fire crews from Norwalk and Milan fought flames for three hours. Damage estimated at around six thousand dollars or more with several farm tools and equipment lost. Three explosions were reported as crews contained the blaze and kept it from reaching the dwelling. The cause is under investigation.

Northern Ohio Phone and GT&E Propose Merger

Northern Ohio Telephone Company and General Telephone & Electronics announce an agreement in principle to merge with GT&E acquiring Northern Ohio by stock swap. The plan values GT&E shares at about 137 million and would serve roughly 490 000 phones in Ohio after completion in two or more years.

Norwalk Lawyer Harry Pruner Dies at 83

Norwalk lawyer Harry P. Pruner 83 of 61 W Seminary St died Tuesday night at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. A Union City Ohio native, he moved to Norwalk in 1935 after Cleveland, graduated Ohio State 1908, served as captain in WWI, and practiced law here. He belonged to St Pauls Episcopal Church and numerous local organizations. Survivors include two sisters, five nieces and nephews. services Friday at 10 am, Kubach Smith Funeral Home, burial Woodland Cemetery Dayton.

Discrimination Claims Checked in Norwalk Visit

The Ohio Civil Rights Commission reviewed discrimination complaints during a Norwalk visit and will follow up. Emer son E. Cole, director of the anti poverty program in Huron and Erie Counties, said the group found valid cases and will hold periodic meetings in bi county areas. He stressed the aim is to uncover problems, not embarrass anyone.

Memorial Service for Marine Thomas A. Gopp Held in New London

A memorial service was conducted for United States Marine Thomas Alan Gopp 20 killed in Vietnam on August 3. The 2 p.m. service at First Methodist Church in New London was led by Marine officers with Rev. Floyd Gaugler. Gopp, a crew chief, died when his helicopter was hit by enemy fire during a rescue lift from a landing zone. He enlisted in August 1965 and served in Vietnam since January. Survived by his parents Russell G. Gopp Sr. and Mrs. Russell G. Gopp, two sisters, and a brother. Also noted, Walter Pollard, previously jailed for a 1966 parole violation, escaped from Toledo workhouse after leaving a rock quarry job.
