Akron Man Hired as Co School Director in Sandusky

Carl Gorman of Akron is hired as vocational director of EHOVE by the Board of Education. Gorman, 31, signed a 10 year contract for Sept 1 to June 30 at 12 000 yearly. Kent State program funds three fourths of the ten month salary, reducing local cost to under 3900 for first year.

Bridge Collapse Kills Seven in Ottawa Rescue Efforts Underway

A 60 foot section of the Heron Road Bridge under construction collapsed into the Rideau River in Ottawa. At least seven workers died and 51 were injured, 21 critically, as debris and wreckage flooded the river. Police sought rosters to account for missing workers while rescue teams used helicopters, saws, and divers to locate survivors.

Food Costs Up Five Per Cent

Washington reports that the cost of feeding the American family rose five percent from a year earlier. For the three months ending in June households spent about 1095 dollars per year on food, up from 1038 last year. The Agriculture Department notes price increases across most items except fruits and vegetables.

Sheriff John Borgia warns county residents to consult lawyers or bankers before signing home improvement contracts. A Cleveland firm allegedly uses high pressure tactics selling storm doors and triple track windows. Congressman Sen Clifford P Case of New Jersey accused a fellow member of blackmail and extortion over soliciting paid attendance at a reception from federal employees.
