At the 1968 Republican national convention in Miami Beach, demonstrations for Rockefeller and Nixon defied new rules. Balloon drops and noisy protests erupted as Raymond Shafer prepared to nominate Rockefeller, with halls filled by deafening horns and signs.
In Inkster Michigan a state police detective was killed and two city officers wounded when snipers attacked police cars. An unidentified man was shot and killed by police. officials said the motive and race behind the attacks remain under investigation.
Five women fainted at a Mexico City beauty school and firemen cleared the building after reports of a back room massage parlor with screaming undressed workers. Exhaust fumes from a gas pump were blamed for the fainting incident.
Ronald Reagan returned to his Miami Beach hotel after a strong run for the Republican nomination. Campaign signs were updated from 1968 to 1972, signaling readiness for another try while he contemplates remaining as California governor.
In a Miami slum area across Biscayne Bay from the Republican National Convention, Black residents looted stores and burned cars early today. Police said politicians unintentionally helped prolong the conflict as at least three people were struck and ten more hurt before officers with tear gas restored order around 2 30 a.m. and reported about 100 arrests.

Gov. Ronald Reagan announces James Rhodes of Ohio as the best vice presidential candidate for the Republican party after a late-night Mississippi delegation meeting. Communications director Lyn Notzinger conveyed the statement following the closed caucus at the convention hall Tropical Room.
Richard Rench a 27 year old apartment builder quit his highway patrolman job last Monday to devote full time to his growing business. He said he enjoyed patrol duties but his other work at apartments boy scouts and the airport leaves him with no time for the job. Rench had served seven years as a state patrolman.
Gasoline leaked into the Huron River after Buckeye Pipeline Co. line was struck during trench work near Webb Settlement Road. Sheriff deputies maintained a night vigil as four investigators joined wildlife officials to assess the spill and prevent explosions.
