The Committee for an August Primary postpones its mock Democratic primary from this weekend to August 16 and 17 after criticism led by Frazier Reams Jr the Ohio Humphrey campaign chair. He said the group gave insufficient notice prompting the delay.
In Ottawa 24500 postal workers vote on a tentative contract after a 21 day strike that halted mail and triggered a ban on inbound shipments. Negotiators agreed on wages and benefits and the pact is submitted to members for ratification with terms to be released after the vote.
A shotgun fired from a crowd of about 50 Negro teenagers wounded five policemen in Dixmoor, with two more officers injured as youths roamed Harvey. Police cordoned a 12 by 3 block area on Harvey's West Side, bonfires burned, cars were damaged, and a curfew was set until 7 30 a.m. CDT. The disturbance began at 9 p.m. and ended by 2 30 a.m. at least 12 youths were arrested and three others injured.
Coast Guard crews recovered the body of Robert Gordon 25 of Cleveland after a small plane crashed into Lake Erie early Sunday near Port Clinton. Two bodies were found Tuesday and authorities continue searching for two more passengers as a helicopter and Coast Guard boats patrol the area. Gordon's mother had previously said she feared her son and three friends were aboard.
Former President Harry S Truman, 84, cast a Democratic ballot in the Missouri primary with friend and chauffeur Mike Westwood Truman by his side. He walked two blocks to the Blue Township polling place, appeared upbeat, and voted midmorning.

Washington UPI reports former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 77, hospitalized at Walter Reed after his sixth heart attack in 13 years. Doctors describe his condition as seriously ill with stable vital signs and a guarded outlook. His son Lt. Col. John Eisenhower and Mamie Eisenhower are by his side as Republicans react to the news.
Gov. Rhodes insists Ohio will stick with his favored son through the first ballot amid discontent among delegates. Some balk at Nixon's absence from Nixon headquarters and urge a switch as Reagan Rockefeller and Stassen have spoken to delegates.
Ohio's Ray Bliss is expected to remain national chairman as Nixon is nominated. Delegates expect Rhodes to lead with support near 55 votes on first roll call, Reagan two, Rockefeller one. Five Rhodes demonstrations are planned with a 50 piece drum corps and thousands of signs prepared.
Norwalk City Council approved hiring an income tax consultant though it has not chosen a firm yet. Auditor Charles Hipp will select from three candidates with Finance Committee guidance awaited. Citizens Willard Bishman and Stanton Taylor urged public involvement before any referendum or final action.
