Sub-standard housing hardships in Huron County families

Mrs. Minnie Opsal, twice divorced with three children, lives in a deteriorating Norwalk home with a leaking roof and rotting foundation. Welfare barriers and landlord neglect trap families in temporary housing while a Negro couple, Mr. and Mrs. Brown, struggle to find a decent place and end up in a DIY house. Desperate residents occupy chicken coops, shacks, or drafty trailers to escape the elements.

Hope Wanes For Hiring School Psychologist

Norwalk City School faces a tough year with a high school guidance counselor vacancy and slim chances of obtaining a psychologist. Supt. Dr. Alban V. Gotaas will recommend eleven teachers to the board tonight, leaving seven vacancies including three at the high school and one senior high guidance post.

Norwalk Youth Dies In Backing Stone Spreader Accident

Alan Burton 19, a Ohio State University summer helper with the County Highway Department, was crushed when the stone spreader backed over him on Town line Road. Leroy Shample 26 rode the spreader. Albert Blankenship 60 operated it. Burton died en route to Fisher Titus Hospital. investigation ongoing by State Highway Patrol. Burdened by multiple survivors and funeral set for Wednesday.

Federal funds sought for Norwalk retirement center plan

A group seeking federal funds aims to develop a 170 acre tract on Norwalk west side into a retirement center with possible nursing home boarding school hospital shopping center professional building and housing. The Albert Metz farm site is under consideration with no deed recorded yet and principals remain unidentified.

Meanest Vandals Drown Kill Cats at Huron Fairgrounds

A spate of vandalism at the Huron County fairgrounds Sunday night flooded horse barns and killed several cats. Water taps were turned on to flood pens, with cats drowned or crushed. Humane Society executive manager Mrs Norman Ward offered a 15 reward for information identifying the culprits.
