The Norwalk Mayor's Committee on Human Relations unanimously endorsed the Civil Rights Bill's fair housing provisions after FHA official DeHart Hubbard explained Title IV. The panel also planned a housing institute following a Kiwanis Club remark on neighborhood values, with 25 attendees and 10 committee members present.
A sub committee of the Mayor's Committee on Human Relations aired points of view on fair housing in a Civil Rights Act program. The controversy focused on water service to a Summit Street home occupied briefly by a Black family. Robert Burr, owner at 26 Summit St, claimed unfair access to officials and said he was not contacted about the sub committee report.
The White House branded a $3 per ton steel price rise as inflationary and contrary to the public interest. President Johnson deliberates action as eleven steel firms including major sheet producers push the hike, seen as adding about $3 to a car price. Gardner Ackley called the move irresponsible.
Norwalk grocers react to Orville Freeman’s inquiry into profit directions amid rising milk and bread costs. Store managers say profits are shared, with farmers taking a larger cut, while some insist supermarkets are not profiteering and price increases reflect higher costs.
John A. Copley, 18, of New London, dozed off while driving on Butler Road near Ohio 18 at 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The car traveled over 500 feet, left the highway, re entered, crossed it again and ended up sideways against a utility pole and fence post. He escaped serious injury with minor cuts and bruises, treated and released at New London jail.
Federal Trade Commission investigates who profits from rising bread and milk prices after consumer complaints. Chairman Dixon says staff meeting will refine plans to trace profit makers in the price jumps amid Agriculture Secretary Freeman calling for the inquiry.
Huron County Treasurer Harold Collier calls calculating each subdivision’s allotment from the county general fund nearly impossible to determine. Norwalk officials argue investments and deposits are distinct, with law requiring interest on inactive deposits to be distributed to subdivisions. City counsel Frederick Waugh says the law is clear and an inquiry into tax revenue placement remains underway for the next council meeting.
Bernard L. Maerkisch of North Fairfield seeks 50000 in Huron County Common Pleas Court against Farm Bureau Co-Operative Association of Norwalk. U S military spokesmen report 83 missions along the coastline to end a second year of bombing North Vietnam while B52 bombers launch a fourth raid in the DMZ. In Dover England a rescue party saves a 7 year old boy who had been stranded on a cliff but he had already saved himself.
Brian Epstein flew to New York to ease growing discontent over John Lennon's remark that the group is more popular than Jesus. Epstein did not deny Lennon made the statement and said he had been misinterpreted. In Chicago, Dr. Martin Luther King prepared to lead hundreds of marchers into an all white neighborhood after bricks and fire greeted previous attempts. King urged resolve and equality.
A grand jury in Austin reports Charles Whitman went to the University of Texas tower fully aware he would die. The killings left 15 people dead before Whitman was shot by police as doctors, police, and citizens testified. Peace groups schedule nationwide Hiroshima vigil on the 21st anniversary. Luci Johnson’s wedding plans include a silent vigil outside the church.
