A 5-year-old girl died and a playmate was seriously injured when three 150-pound Great Danes mauled them near Washington in Prince Georges County Maryland. Two dogs were captured late Wednesday near the attack site around noon.
In Washington Senate leaders projected final action by nightfall on a plan to end the airline strike with GOP Leader Everett Dirksen saying he had no doubt of swift action. In Findlay Ohio a Cleveland man held his wife step-mother and three city police at knifepoint before surrendering after taking pills to calm himself Henry Lee Davis 24 faces assault with a deadly weapon charges in city jail.
Charles J. Whitman toured the University of Texas tower sniper site ten days before his killing spree and left a signature in Dallas at the First National Bank registration book four days before the deaths. A 50 story Dallas tower visit and the UT tower visit linked to the mass murder, underscoring planned timing.

The Huron County Board of Health unanimously accepted Dr. James M. Hindley’s resignation as health commissioner. Hindley had not been at his desk since June 13 and cited health as his primary concern while noting no ill will toward the board. The board considers joint physician employment with Seneca County and other steps to appoint a successor.
The Huron County Board of Health voted unanimously to postpone the proposed Housing Code until a later date. Members cited awaiting input from the new health commissioner and replacing Dr. James M. Hindley as reasons, with the code already having two readings in June and July. The board also granted Best Trailer Park at East Norwalk until August 20 to fix its water supply per an earlier order.
A Monroeville youth, 14 year old David Francis of Williams Road, escaped serious harm when a tractor he was driving west on U S 20 was struck by a 1961 compact car in the outside lane. The tractor rolled, landing upside down. both drivers received bruises and were cited. Francis faces a juvenile court citation for turning without due caution and the other driver, Roger Kuns, for passing on the right.
A five year old New London boy, James Ferber, is in fairly good condition at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital after being struck by a speeding bicycle near his home at 85 First Street. He sustained a leg injury and was admitted at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday. May Lloyd, 53 Pleasant Street, was admitted to Fisher-Titus after a pedestrian accident in downtown Norwalk. She tripped leaving a local restaurant, injuring her arm and hip and is listed in fair condition.
Norwalk based Superior Coach Corp moves forward with a building permit for a new storage area addition 72 feet by 80 feet. The project expands the small parts storage facilities at the company site.
The Lake Erie District of the Council of Carpenters relocated to 35 Woodlawn Ave from 34 Walnut St, in the former home of president Paul Loper. Loper cited space needs due to a more complex contract and fringe benefits paperwork. The Norwalk office serves a nine-county district from its central location.
Oil drillers abandoned the Robert E. Finlay property near Collins Wednesday after striking a dry hole. The operation halted with no production and crews began cleanup work at the site.
