John Keyes of International Solarthermies Corp says solar heating will be practical in about four years. A backyard furnace, costing around 5000 dollars, could heat a 3000 square foot Los Angeles home with 90 percent of its heat in sunny climates, by storing heat in gravel and circulating it through existing ducts.

City garbageman faints in heat on Elm Street
Robert Thayer, a city garbageman, fainted in 95 degree heat Friday morning while carrying a trash can on Elm Street near Woodlawn. He suffered bumps to his head and shoulder when he fell against a garbage truck and then struck the pavement. He was treated at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital.
