Treasury Secretary William Simon says the U S is not ready to withstand another Arab oil embargo and compares the potential impact to a picnic. He blames political demagogues environmental extremists and economic illiteracy for blocking energy independence efforts.
Spelman College students and faculty held 14 trustees captive for over 26 hours to push for a black woman to head the 95 year old college. The siege ended as trustees met with board members in a late night session.
Tornadoes and severe storms moved through the Midwest and Plains with no major damage reported. Sightings covered Iowa near Indianola Knoxville Woodburn and Kansas near Scott City Hays Dighton Salina with 70 mph winds at Salina and Fort Riley. Hail accompanied the storms with golfball size hail at Clay Center Electra and Eddyville. Columbia Gas of Ohio announced a 25 cent per thousand cubic feet surcharge for emergency gas costs incurred last winter, affecting about 2,400 residential customers.
Showers and storms locally heavy at times today and tonight with highs in the 60s and lows near 40s. Sunday turns cooler with more showers and an 80 percent today, 90 percent tonight, 70 percent Sunday likelihood. winds east to southeast 10 to 20 mph. The City of Norwalk obtained a permanent injunction blocking on premises consumption of beer and wine at the Hitching Post at 222 East Main Street. Judge Robert W. Smith issued the order after a December 12 complaint alleging zoning violations and permit issues.
An Edison High School senior was injured Thursday evening when struck by a car driven by 21 year old Norwalk man Robert Strader. Strader confessed to intoxicated driving and leaving the scene, and is jailed on bond of 1145 dollars. The 18 year old, James Fondaw, suffered a compound arm fracture and other injuries but is listed in satisfactory condition.
UPI reports clocks will spring forward tonight ending standard time as daylight time begins. The change starts at 2 00 AM Sunday to deliver extra evening daylight through late October with eight months of daylight time under a Congress bill facing strong opposition and unlikely immediate effect.
